No voice input button on keyboard

I am observing the same problem on Nexus 5 with no voice input button on keyboard (one of the features I use the most).

"Voice input key" in Google keyboard settings is definitely enabled too.

I am in the UK and I seem to recall the device being initially configured with system-language set to English (United Kingdom). However, I recall changing this to English (United States) so as to workaround the issue with the 'OK Google' feature on Google Now screen. No matter what type of configuration I set up now (e.g. language switching UK/US and 'voice input key' option on/off etc) I can't get the voice input button on the keyboard.

It seems that, along with other observations on this thread, that this is simply a defect in Kitkat that Google should be addressing soon.

Update: i've just installed the app swiftkey which has resolved this issue for me.

I don't think it's a bug anymore. I have now had two different devices (Nexus 5 and Moto G), and both models have this issue, and in both cases it's dependent from the software I'm using (Chrome does't have the voice button, other apps do). I think the application is able to control what special keys appear on the keyboard. So I really think it's a Chrome issue. Maybe Google thinks people don't need voice typing to input an URL.

I updated to KitKat TODAY. Love it.
I noticed this problem TODAY. Why I'm on here.
By chance, I received a Google Keyboard update TODAY. It was pretty neat giving us the option to type whole sentences using gesture controls just by flying over the space bar. I was hoping this update would fix this problem - it did not.
One of the best features of the Android keyboard and KitKat gets released without it... a little more time in beta next time maybe Google?

I think I fix this on my N4 by going in and choosing "Google Voice Typing" instead of "Google Keyboard" as my input method. Now I get the mic icon in the keyboard in most apps.

Of course the voice input key needs to be checked but also it is possible to show two sets of key on the keyboard. If everything else is okay just try swiping your finger down over the three right hand keys on the screen ie from the letter L down. That action switches the microphone off and on.

You have to enable voice typing in addition to selecting "show voice input" Then the comma key changes to microphone all the time...

Hello!
I have a simular question.
Google play offers it's own microphone icon but there is no way to choose an input language while using it. I thought that installing Google Keyboard instead of my HTC Desire's default one would give me an option to input text in any language I choose. But even though I have now possibility to choose voice input from many languages in the keyboard it is never appears on the screen. I touch the language but google play seems to not allowing the external mic to run and it is still only possible to use it's own mic that has no option to change an input language. Any ideas, guys?
Thanks!
p.s. by the way the same happens with youtube native app

I couldn't find it either, but then I pressed (and held) the "Done" button on the right for 1 second and it appeared. If I press it (and hold) again, it turns into an @ symbol and the "Done" becomes a "Next" button. This also brings up the ability to select emoticons.

How strange though... the behavior is different in Gmail than it is when I type in Yahoo Mail. The @ symbol doesn't appear in Yahoo mail when I long press the button on the right.

Odd indeed, but at least I have voice typing again. My google keyboard version is 2.0.19133.927933a 2014 on a 1 week old Droid Maxx

This is good but not what I meant :)
Try this - open youtube app, tap "search" and then tap mic. You will get a SpeakNow circle, but there will be no switch for changing language. How that can be fixed? I hoped that I could use google keyboard for switching, but even though I am able to tap for, let say, French voice input the google keyboard, the SpeakNow is not launched. I will try to record a video
So, I need either to disable completely youtube mic and use only google keyboard with ability to change voice input language or add this switch to default mic. Any ideas?

Look guys, I find it an amazing stuff, especially from such a giant like Google itself.
Now look, there are several different behaviors of voice apps.
1. GoogleNow (see the screenshot) There is no option to change input voice recognition to another language. One needs to change system language and than default one will be used (but at least if you touch the English(US) android opens the setting where you can quite easy change it)
2. Youtube like app (see the screenshot) - there is no option to change to recognition language and there is no way to open settings from the app
3. SMS like app (see the screenshot) - here it comes, the most convenient method - one can change input language right away.
So, what I would like to see - an option to change the language right away in every applicable app. Any ideas now?

I just downloaded Google keyboard from the playstore and now it works again. Maybe somebody already posted that, but it worked.

I just realized after MONTHS of my icon missing, and NO option to even turn it back on... that maybe the problem was due to me deleting something that initially utilized the mic option.... so I went and searched in my application manager at all the apps I had turned off.... EUREKA! I turned Google Search and Google Voice Search back on, and the problem ironed itself out perfectly without a hitch! So my suggestion is sniff around your phone, and take a look at any apps you 'turned off' because maybe you didn't think you would use them. Hope this helps! :)

Hi there

I had a same problem in not having voice to text available in all keyboard contexts. I found installing Swype, which has Dragon voice to text button, was a good solution to this. I think there is a way to show the voice to text button in the keyboard options but I recall the details off the top my head and, as I say, I remember it wasn't available in all keyboard contexts.

Hope you find a solution that is good for you :-)

After you do all that posted! Go back to your keyboard and hold down the small settings round gear for a few seconds and a small window will appear with the................... mic symbol / settings symbol / copy symbol. Hit the mic symbol and it stays on. Next time you start to send a text just it the speaker symbol and start talking! Works pretty well.

Has anyone figured out the "Mic" tab bug!?? Talk about STRESS!! I have serious issues w/my hands and it's very PAINFUL for me to use my keyboard-! HELP!!!!!OR DO I JUST GET ANOTHER NEW PHONE!! this metropcs NEW to market the L70 I just got 4 days ago;((

My fix was:
Go to apps>settings>aplication manager>all>Keyboard>Force stop the app, Clear cache, Clear data, Clear defaults.
It worked for me on LG G2

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I just updated to Android version 4.4.2 last night. I noticed that my keyboard microphone disappeared also. Here is what I did to fix it (and IT WORKED!!!):

1 - go to settings
2 - select Language & input
3 - check-mark Google voice typing
4 - click voice search
5 - click language & select
6 - click back to return to Language & input
6 - click text-to-speech options
7 - select Google text-to-speech engine
8 - click on the gear
9 - click language
10 - select English (United States)
11 - click settings for Google text-to-speech
12 - check-mark auto-update voices
13 - click back to return to Google text-to-speech engine
14 - click install voice data
15 - select English (United Sates)
16 - select voice
17 - click back to exit
18 - FINISHED. This will fix the problem. I then went to my text messaging and LO AND BEHOLD, my microphone was back. My keyboard was back to the original, pre-updated keyboard.

I know these directions are a bit lengthy, but they worked. Maybe someone can figure out which step or steps are needed and repost, eliminating the unnecessary steps. HAPPY TEXTING.
