iPad still dominates tablet traffic, but Nook surges past Kindle Fire
Apple's tablet experiences decline in market share, while the battle of e-readers gets a new leader.

Apple's tablet accounted for 91 percent of the hundreds of millions of Web traffic impressions sampled by the Chitika Ad network during the week of June 4 -10, a decline of 3.5 percent from 94.6 percent in May. Coming in at a very distant second place was Samsung's Galaxy Tab, which captured only 1.7 percent of tablet Web traffic, followed by Acer Iconia, Toshiba Thrive, and Asus Transformer Pad.

Aside from the traffic drop experienced by the iPad, the most notable finding was that the Nook had overtaken the Kindle Fire in Web traffic impressions. Compared with an earlier study of tablet traffic, the Kindle Fire maintained its 0.71 percent market share, while the Nook surged past the Kindle Fire with a 0.85 percent market share.

"In the time since that study, Barnes & Noble has launched a new advertising campaign, and their newest device sold out within weeks," Chitika pointed out. "While that device is a simple e-reader without Web browsing capabilities, the increase in Nook use may be attributed to brand familiarity through these advertisements."

Barnes &Noble is doing a good job of hawking those nooks in-store, apparently, because I don't see a whole lot of Nook ads on TV myself.

2. Isn't it a tad ironic that a B&M bookstore is selling a tablet reader, ie, hastening it's own demise (maybe)?

I see just as many ads on TV for the Nook as I do for the Kindle Fire. I think the fact that there is a dedicated (physical) store for the Nook finally put it over the top, relative to the Fire.

Target stopped selling the Fire because Amazon competes directly with there core business.

Creating the Nook sets B&N up for the future. I can see them downsizing their physical stores but the Nook will extend the life of their business.

Maybe. It's hard to tell (for me, anyways) exactly what direction B&N will be heading in. I'm not certain if them selling a tablet will hurt or help in the long term. But I'm sure they can't ignore tablet sales altogether.

My wife has the Nook tablet and loves it. She's not a tech freak like me so it works well for her. B&N has classes at the store to help people learn how to use them so I made her go to that. I was amazed at how many older people were at the class which was pretty cool.
