My son's Nexus 4 has gotten red light of death. Evidently his battery was rather low though not nearly empty. The LED has gone red and no response from device. He's tried plugging in and hitting power button and rocker. Still no life. He plans to try again later before ordering a replacement. Seems like this issue is a real one that needs to be addressed further. Makes me wary of my Nexus 4 going on fritz, too. Not a good thing!!!! However, overall I truly do like this phone.

How long has he had it before this happened?

I would charge it for a while and then do a soft reset:

To soft reset your phone press and hold the Power/Lock button for a 2-3 seconds and the phone will restart. Wait about 10 seconds and then press and hold the Power/Lock button again to restart.

If that does not work I would call Google support.

These batteries are not meant to be depleted. Plug the phone into a PC that is set to NOT go into sleep mode, leave it to charge for 8 hours. See if this fixes the problem.

Thanks for suggestions. He's giving them a try. He's had his since Day 1 and has loved it. His is reason I got one.

Try pressing on the back of the phone beneath the nexus logo area. Also try popping it in the fridge (i know sounds crazy). The best thing to do is just send it back to Google unless of course your son has started messing around with the device (root, roms etc). It might be likely though that Google wont be able to turn the phone on themselves and will have to reset the whole phone meaning they will never know what your son did with his phone.

Thanks. He is stock. Will pass along your ideas. My guess is he'll ask for replacement under warranty. Much appreciated.

I've read chat sessions from Google CS where they told the user to press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (while the phone is Not plugged in), then plug the device in and press the power button for a couple of seconds and it should restart.
