I get the plastic argument though. I pay a premium price for a premium phone. I don't want it to feel like the Arrowhead water bottle in my fridge. I think last year was the first time they really started to get the plastic right. Obviously the best example is the One X, but the GS3 is a good example as well. But truth be told, that was the first time I think Samsung got it right. I'm on Sprint, so the phones are different, but the first two Galaxy phones were not made out of good plastic. They just weren't. I do like the look and the feel of the GS3. I imagine the 4 will be much of the same. My wife loves her GS3 and if she's happy, I'm happy. But she hated the Epic and the GS2. Not to say HTC hasn't had some plastic fiascos, because they have. Apparently the T-bolt kickstand was a flaming piece of junk. And even on my beloved OG EVO, the back always felt like it was going to break in pieces, though it never did. But with HTC I always feel better knowing that the frame is metal and it can take a beating. And in the industry I work in, it certainly gets it. It's obviously a personal preference. So if people take a dump on your personal preference you'd be irritated. I would be. But when you see people who have decided that their preference should be the model for all, you know you're dealing with dummies.
And we're never going to end the fanboy stuff. What else are we going to do from August through March every year while we wait for the new cycle of devices?
I lose so much interest in what people have to say though when they instantly resort to the following two complaints about Samsung: 1) It's cheap plastic and 2) TouchWiz sucks.
Because of past experience on these threads, let me make sure I am understood in why those two things irritate me. Plastic has a bad reputation because it's less durable than metal obviously. If I buy an expensive car, it irritates me that it's fiberglass and plastic. I want something made well. HOWEVER, on a smartphone device in a world where we all upgrade every 6-24 months, as long as you have any ounce of desire to take care of your things you will probably never have a negative experience with a decent plastic phone. Is anyone here familiar with the jokes about how old school Nokia devices are indestructible? What do you suppose they are made out of? Titanium? Cast Iron? Tempered Steel? No, it's plastic. I agree that some plastics are equivalent to ghetto trash. But the S3 and Note 2 are very high quality. Sure, my battery cover has creaked once or twice while installing or removing a case. But if you HATE plastic, you better not use a case or you are a hypocrite. The chances are very high that your case contains plastic, and therefore your phone now has a plastic feel. Sorry, but it's true. All devices have weaknesses in their manufacturing process. If you think a phone is indestructible because it gives you a false sense of security with it's aluminum back, you might learn the hard way eventually that you are incorrect. Accidents happen no matter what you carry in your pocket. Any phone can fall and be damaged. To say Samsung sucks because it has cheap plastic, is being completely illogical and pathetic.
I'm not really going to get into the touchwiz piece because i've gone on and on about plastic. But suffice it to say, I only hear a handful of decent reasons why people do not like it compared to the hundreds of times people complain. People say it's too heavy, or ugly, or cartoonish, or whatever. But no one can ever get specific. Which is frustrating. I feel like if you have such an extreme hatred for something, it shouldn't be too hard to say why. Phil, Jerry, Anndrew, and others on this site have said in reviews that they don't like it, so everyone in the forums wants to feel cool by repeating the same thing. If I HATE something, I will jump at the opportunity to tell people why. I will not get offended that they ask and say: "I don't have to explain that to you!". That is a copout.
So anyway, long story short I think people like to be negative and complain. It's easy to complain when you buy a phone that is awesome, but never gets talked about in the media because another phone is more popular. As Android users we all experience that everyday with Apple. HTC users experience that with Samsung AND Apple. But that doesn't mean that our device is any worse because of that. We can still enjoy life either way without making a**es of ourselves. Choice is good and inspires healthy competition. As a fan of Samsung, I hope HTC can knock it out of the park with this One because it will push everyone else to be even better. I just wish HTC fans didn't want to crucify me because I have an S3 in my pocket and am interested to see what the S4 will bring to the table.
