Not liking the Nexus 5X because of lag

Sorry to hear that. I actually returned my 6P. It was a great phone, but too big and too slippery and reminded me too much of my N6. On top of that having a processor that could only be tamed by one manufacturer left me unsettled. My 5X on the other hand has been nearly flawless since the April update and I keep it in rotation with a G5 and a Robin. If it had the G4 camera it would hands down be my favorite phone.

Sorry for going slightly off topic, but it is kind of on topic. You have the Robin and the 5X, so I have to ask, which one do you like better or are they about equal? To me, they are a great example of phones in the same category.

That's a tough question because I really like both a lot. These are the things I think are better on the 5X: comfort of holding and grip, FP sensor (best of the best), best flash / flashlight of any phone I have ever had, camera's by a slight margin and screen by a slim margin based on a cooler tint, guaranteed updates. For the Robin: I love the looks of this device and I have the midnight color. For me both of these devices are how cell phones should be built and by that I mean polycarbonate backs. When I had the 6P and now the G5 I always felt or feel like I have to be careful where or on what I set the phone down on for fear of scratching it which is just something ridiculous to have to worry about with a "mobile" device, but I am also aware that the majority of people prefer glass or metal. As a side note, I don't use cases because for me when you put a case on a phone it looks like every other phone, adds weight and bulk, none of which are good. Anyway, things l like better about the Robin: The design is so unique, build quality is excellent and it feels very solid, cell reception, speaker(s) are great, battery.

Things that are a draw or very close: Speed & fluidity, but the Robin might get the win by a slight margin, screen brightness outdoors, bloatware or lack thereof. I am very happy with both of these phones and if either had the 820, 4 gigs and the G5's cameras it would be the perfect phone. I'll keep dreaming.

I've been using an iPhone SE for a few weeks but picked up a brand new 5x last week. I'm definitely getting a bit of lag. It's very noticeable playing Head Soccer, not exactly an intense game. In general it's slower to open apps than I'd like and it's considerably slower than the iPhone SE. It's a real shame as I loved my old Nexus 5 and really wanted to love the Nexus 5x. I think I may return it.

I have been in the iPhone world for about 5 years. Always wanted to try Android, I have nothing against it since I'm really not an Apple fanboy. Going to the Nexus line was a logical move for me, I like the simplicity of the pure OS that works exactly how it's maker intended it.
Talking about the 5X I have absolutely no problem with the plastic build, the screen is ok, the camera is good, wifi speed is fine, great FP reader, etc. I don't play games, I use my phone for email, Viber/Whatsapp, reading webpages, occasional Google maps, so I would define my usage as moderate.

BUT:
Maybe I am the unlucky one since I have experienced almost ALL of the issues that others are complaining about online. In the first few days the phone got so hot around the FP area that was uncomfortable to keep in my pocket, not to mention putting it on my ear to talk... it was crazy. First night it lost 40% of it's battery sitting on my nightstand. All stock apps, just what I mentioned above (and no FB). I've gone to developer options and selected "no background processes", with no success it seems. Only a factory reset made the device stop heating. A week later... again, the same thing.

I need a battery app, a cache cleaning one and constant monitoring during the day to make sure that I don't find it losing half it's power by sitting in my pocket. The quick menu lags and freezes every few days, heavy webpages are a nightmare to navigate. The camera app has lag that bad that I miss shots on a regular basis. Why? Why should I have to do all those things, and why these apps, written by the same company who created the OS are unable to do their job well? It's nice to have the option to install third party apps if you want to, but it's crazy that YOU HAVE TO in order to be able to use your phone.

If this is the showcase of what Android is about it's a big disappointment. I know that the 5X is not a flagship, but nevertheless it should be able to do what was designed to do. They say it lags because of the encryption. Fine, but why include encryption on hardware that is unable to handle it well? Coming from the iOS world it seems CRAZY that I even have to consider disabling services like location, 4G or WiFi, essentially crippling the phone just to be able to get through a day.

With the usage mentioned above the best I got was 5.5h of screen time which I consider to be very good, but usually it's just 1,5-3h and the thing that bothers me the most is the inconsistency. If it last 2h... fine, but today it's 1,5h tomorrow it could be 4 or 1, who knows. It's unreliable and that's why I'll switch to... I don't know, I'm thinking about the 6P to give Android one more try. No way am I paying for that horrid TouchWiz UI.

iOS has it's drawbacks for sure, the locked system, the 7 years old home screen, I REALLY hate that I can't customize the notifications that I get on the lock screen, but if I trade optimization for customization I am not expecting to also get inconsistency and unreliability. If a phone has 5 functions it should be able to do all of them well, otherwise, what's the point?

My phone found out that I'm complaining on the forums. 36 hours after charging, same use pattern, 2,2h SOT and I'm at 42% battery. Great!

But as I said, inconsistent, other times it's dead after 8-9h of standby.

I'm glad that at least for some, the phone is acting as it should. I really wanted to like it. But really, you have no camera lag when taking pictures? or when switching from landscape to portrait? Heavy webpages scroll smoothly? No battery drain?

For me not even Doze is working right... during the day it works fine but after a full charge 4 times out of 5 it doesn't function anymore. Only a reboot brings it back to life... this makes me remember the "good" old days of Windows 95 when you always needed a reboot to fix some glitch in the software.

Correct, save for smooth web pages which can be hit or miss on any Android. Maybe you got a lemon. And I love doze I can leave the phone overnight and lose 2 percent

Now that's amazing. Doze seems to work fine for me. When my phone is sitting on the desk, not being used by me, it expends less than 1% an hour. The phone is still "working" since it gives me alarms. I turn my phone off at night after I've charged it. My old phone would lose 2-3% overnight. The Nexus 5x shows 100% when I wake it in the morning. Other than turning it on every morning, usually between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., I never have to "reboot" it. I usually take a one-hour, or less, nap in the afternoon and I always put my phone on the "non-alert" status but don't turn it off. As I doze, apparently it does, too, and it shows the same battery level when I wake up that it did when I lay down.

I'm running Android N now, just for fun, and I have a problem with a couple of apps but the Nexus 5x is running fine for me.

I live in Mexico and my service provider is Telcel which seems to be rather non-intrusive. I like that, too.

I still have slight lag on the camera, but it's way better now than it was when I got the phone in October. I'm hoping future updates will continue to make the lag shorter.

or when switching from landscape to portrait?
No lag here.

Heavy webpages scroll smoothly?
They do for me.

No battery drain?
Not at all.

I don't doubt your experience is real and terrible. And I don't know what's typical or not typical. I can really speak only for my experience with the Nexus 5x.

Doze works fine for me too, but not all the time. When it does I lose 1-2% overnight. Other times it doesn't kick in and I can see constant drain even when the phone is left untouched.

By the way, it's seems a terrible idea to make doze work only when the phone stands still. Come on, the phone can be in your pocket for hours, it would help a lot to save battery during those times. (Looking forward to N)

This. That very thing drives me nuts! My old position had a lot of getting up on a consistent basis. In that case, the best place for my phone to be is my pocket. I'm really hoping that Android N will fix that.

Doze is working as it was designed to work so a "fix" isn't needed but would being able to turn on "battery saver" even when fully charged meet your needs. Of course, there is no free lunch so anything done to prolong battery life, such as turning the device off, has a price attached.

What is the price for Doze?

"Work as it was designed" != "Can't be improved upon."

A better implementation would also be to Doze even when the phone is moving. Pretty easy to tell when it's not in use. The screen hasn't been on in 30 minutes? Not playing music or podcasts? Not doing turn-by-turn navigation? Doze.

I haven't been keeping tabs on the 5x but everything I read seems to indicate some performance issues. Has anyone gotten to the bottom of what's causing this? The lg G4 and v10 are blazing fast and that's with a higher res screen and a heavy ui overlay. Stock android + 1080p + 808 processor should honestly be the fastest phone on earth why isn't this the case? I am in the market for a smaller android phone (nexus 6 and iPhone 6s are what I have now) and the 5x I would think would be a sensible upgrade to my beloved nexus 5(which to this day runs incredibly well, like shockingly well). Id like to spend $350 or less, 5x and Galaxy s6 seem like the best options and would rather have a 5x but gs6 seems like a better value given all the extra features and performance issues of the 5x

Not even working as designed... in my case at least (without a daily reboot). It's a curios idea to make it save battery only when sitting flat. And battery save mode is not the same thing. That thing really cripples your phone, it's like going back 4yrs performance wise. But I guess Google really wants to track your movements and doesn't want to miss the opportunity to receive data and run a lot of background processes.

I have heard others saying they turn off their phone at night (to save battery probably?). Look, we shouldn't need to go back in time with this kind of behavior just to preserve battery life. Others are doing it very well... so, it CAN be done. It's just a matter of will or priorities I suppose.

I don't really care for Doze myself (I charge the phone every night), but I do think it should work well for other people. We don't all have the same use cases.

A. The phone doesn't have to lay flat. Not moving.
B. I turn my phone off at night because I want to sleep. It would either be turn it off or turn on the "Do Not Disturb" and it's just as easy to turn it off.
C. I don't wear a tinfoil hat.
