Note 3 - FM Radio tuner???

Most of the links I find state that the Note 3 does not have an FM radio. Good luck getting the manufacturer or carrier to give you any useful information, other than a PDF spec sheet. The Verizon Q/A states that there is NOT one, but there are plenty of apps you could use ...

I think it should be required and enabled on all phones and carriers. I've read lots of forum posts about FM radios in phones, half or more contribute nothing to the discussion. If you don't like it, don't use it. Instead I hear things like it's old, just use streaming (really bad when they think it's the same), it has commercials and DJs, just use MP3s, need headphones for reception, takes up space, and so on. I don't care, I still want to listen to local FM radio, preferably HD, from the same device, and if/when the cell towers don't work (emergency) or are not in range.

Motorola Droid X had FM and was nice. From what I can find, the Samsung Note 2 has an FM receiver, but Verizon disabled it, probably to convert users to streaming and support their revenue model. FM radio will be a consideration for my next phone/carrier upgrade, but I don't think they care because not enough people are interested.

Side note - During the last 3-4 years, I've won a total of $2,404.00 cash by being the Nth caller, plus other stuff like Sea World tickets, zoo tickets, concert tickets (some front row), sporting event tickets, dining gift cards, etc. by listening to FM radio.

I have never won jack crap off of radio. I've tried though but no luck. Here in Central Florida, I listen to 96.5 talk radio as our "premier" rock station WJRR sucks donkey balls. They'll play 2 good songs, then 2 songs that belong in an adult contemporary station, then 10 minutes of commercials, then 2 songs I wouldn't consider playing in an elevator...and so on.

With this said, I do listen to FM on my phone here and there. Nextradio is the FM app on Sprint's version but to be honest...I've yet to try it out.

I guess you don't realize that terrestrial radio is a dying breed. Radio ratings are in the basement and getting lower and lower as the years go by,, fm radio is nearly a dead media. I would put a large chunk of change betting that within the next 5 years no phone will have a fm radio .. Yes I know you love it but you are definitely in the minority,,, not the minority on these forums maybe (although I would guess yes) but the minority of the entire country who still want and need terrestrial radio.

I think that country music fans, talk radio fans, and drivers around the country would disagree. As well as ad agencies, which don't have a problem paying for radio ad campaigns. Terrestrial radio is still alive, but they have augmented with streaming to expand their reach. And, despite the usability of on-line traffic reports through Maps and the like, many people rely on it for traffic info. No, radio isn't dead. It's amazing how many people still listen to the radio for entertainment while they're in the car. Despite having over a thousand CDs, and tons of mp3s that I could play, I often default to the radio during my commutes. Sometimes I just don't want to be bothered and want to let someone else drive the entertainment train while I'm driving the car. I don't see it as that useful in a phone (I rarely used it with my Droid X) but some do, I suppose. Don't confuse that with the state of radio in general though.

Numbers don't lie, businesses are not buying commercial time on radio stations anymore. Radio stations have practically give spots away. Not trying to argue or be difficult, look into it yourself, it's a dying media. The ratings are not there any longer. You are the minority whether or not you like that. This not my opinion,, this Is fact. I listen to atleast a dozen different talk shows,, all are either satellite radio where your not censored or streamed on Internet and podcast.

Bob Lefsetz is not anybody that I'd listen to regarding anything about modern culture. He's a punchline in my circles.

I know a little bit about radio.

One thing that we can both agree on its that it's not a growth industry. But it's far from dead.

We now live in a world where terrestrial radio is, for all intents and purposes, dead. To be accurate, it's on life support. But, practically speaking, the platform has done nothing but feebly react to what Pandora and a handful of others pioneered -- Internet radio.
Soon, what we have come to take for granted as an option in a car will cease to exist -- the AM/FM dial. It will go away. Give it 10 years. If that. Traditional radio's only chance at semi-survival: More Pandora knock-offs such as Clear Channel's iHeart Radio. Or, hold your laughter, something innovative.

Just pointing out why as we move forward fm radios will be showing up less and less in smartphones.. I can find hundreds of articles supporting this but not one that will support the future of fm radio.

You just don't get it. Trust me, you don't know what you are talking about. I'm not trying to be mean when I say that. Don't forget that radio stations have an internet presence as well. This underpins the terrestrial side. The thing is that 99% of all cars have no wi-fi. It's going to take decades before there's a substantial change in that percentage. Maybe THEN you might see terrestrial stations start falling by the wayside. Decades. And I'm not being a Luddite when I say that.

Bottom line is, terrestrial radio is far from dead at this point. THAT is just a fact.

The Note 2 had an FM Tuner so the Note 3 probably will have it too. But, there is a good chance Verzion will block it so you will have to use data to listen to a radio station.

Seems strange only because the Moto G on Verizon has the FM Radio intact. But that is a prepaid so that might be why.

UPDATED: (again) - - - - -

Here in the UK via easily available forums, and Amazon, eBay, Samsung etc. I can state reasonably confidently that as one of 4 phones I researched before buying my Note 3, the Note 2 N7100 (most prevalent here) had an FM radio and was 3g.
The N7105 had no radio but a 4G/LTE modem.

Unless as @mssca offered (sorry to you - new edit) , with the apparent built in FM compatible antenna on the N3, one can play with the internals (and squeeze in a tuner?) we're SOL (thanks DrSavant!).

I love FM radio for talk channels, and recording quizzes in the UK. Podcasts are slow to appear or not at all.

I love MW for live BBC 5 sport / football commentary.
I am SOL there. Although I can get it on app, I mostly have no 3g signal where I go walking.

An app or internet is no use in a lot of situations. Hardware rules.

--------------------------------------------
I love my 3rd phone, a Samsung (wait for it) GT - E2121 pocket phone.
Pocket money. Full speaker FM sound without a headset. Super signal / build quality / controls.
For ?20 unlocked (2g) this is your actual pocket phone. easy to carry around and change sims. Basically my FM radio.

Lets keep FM radio!

Sorry guys. I have the AT&T note 2 and just purchased the new AT&T note 3. Neither has an FM Radio nor any circuit for a FM Radio. Yes, you can stream a network radio but not a true over the air FM station. At least the AT&T versions.
The Korean International Note 2 and or Note 3 may have a radio. Not sure due to not owning the International ones. I will not speculate on any quotes from any sources that does not have or own any note 2 or 3 that does have a true radio built in. I am amused at sources that states whether a phone has what features with out having a phone to truly back up their statements.
Anyway I can without a doubt, due to owning them, state that AT&T versions of the Note 2 and Note 3 do not have true FM Radio capabilities.

I thought the sprint version had a fm tuner.

Hi. I gathered the consensus from US users was that none had a physical, non data dependent tuner.

The point I was heading for in my longer post, but never made, is there may be a technical and / or packaging reason why a 4G modem and an FM tuner won't work together or possibly share an antenna. In the hope some of our many boffin viewers would weigh in with technical reasons. There probably are other phone models though that have both.
If yours has a real tuner, put it out there.

My (?) was to query the following poster @TomL who SEEMED to take serious issue with my first draft from my GS2, while my N3 was charging, that I shouldn't comment stupidly as I didn't own an N3. Way to go for a first ever posting.

@Zmann - I went back again and appreciated the insight into the state of FM stations there at present, sad though it was. I expect FM will last a bit longer in the UK.

With all due respect, it was a flawed analysis from an outside observer.
