Note 4 Quality Control?

hey, we all expect what we buy to be perfect, whether its a 20 dollar can opener, or a 50k car, but, unfortunately we live in a time where corporate profits always out trump product perfection.
unless you can afford a hand made, limited production item, this is the world we are now stuck in..
and, to the poster who thought that Apple products came out "flawless" under Steve Jobs, do you think he stood on the assembly line and inspected every phone that came off it? Their defect rate wasn't much less than any other mfg, since he used farmed out, low priced, foreign assembly companies just like every other consumer electronics company did/does...

My point is that the Note 4 doesn't cost what every other phone cost. It cost significantly more. What I'm reading here is that I shouldn't expect less faulty units or higher quality for the increased cost. The Note 4 doesn't cost $600 or $700. It cost $825....

EDIT: This was just a case of me having the wrong expectations. Thanks all that set me straight.

It's Not a point of setting you straight, as I said before perception is in the eyes of the individual. That is your right. You and only you own that.

I have never bought an iPhone 6+ but I was under the impression they were a grand...

I think the 128GB 6+ may be up there.

Oh God...my first computer was a 486 dos operated system that only had files. Lol. What was it...128 megs of ram and 256 megs of memory! Lol. Now...wow! And only had a floppy disk...do they even exist now? Lol

Haha, I'm with you on this.....my first computer I believe did have Windows but was indeed 256 memory. Our technology truly is amazing and has come a looooong way! We are just so spoiled and reliant on what we have at our access today, (and pay a lot of $$$ for it) that we just get very frustrated very quickly when it doesn't work, but it is Technology and can have it's issues.

I sell Real Estate and it has become a proven fact that many things built these days are "Built to Fail", or should we say, have a much Shorter Life Span! Manufacturers are doing this intentionally....... A Water Heater that used to last 15-20 years now has a rating of 8-9 years, A/C units used to last 20 years and again now have a life span of like 10......dishwashers are rated at 7 years now! I personally have a dishwasher that is 7 years old that I paid $1000 for and the hidden control panel recently died.....my previous dishwasher lasted 20 years!

Are you kidding? You're paying for the Wacom technology that no other phone has. And the huge AMOLED screen that's NOT pentile. Those are expensive technologies.

And I'm not talking just parts. R&D and engineering to get everything working is expensive, too.

If you want to compare this phone to others as far as price go, you need to compare it to ones that have a similar feature set. Except there aren't any.

I would agree more with that if the Note 3 and the Note 2 before it had a similar price. Sure, the phone has evolved. Tech has a way of doing that. What does a brand new Note 3 retail for? Now, what does a brand new G3 retail for vs a brand new G2.

What I've read here seems to indicate that despite the higher cost we shouldn't expect less faulty units than say a Moto G or S3 Mini. I comprehend that.

To put it another way, I expect my BMW M4 to have higher build quality, and reliability than a Nissan 370Z, not just higher performance. I may have incorrect expectations and can accept that.

The Verizon Samsung Galaxy note 4 is $700 no contract

That's in line with my expectations. So perhaps it's just AT&T that is charging $825.

I do believe you hit the nail on the head. Mine was $825 on Next plan. Highest I've seen, but I get the discount on the plan. It's neither here nor there. Save on the front or the duration of a contract.

Well, I think my question boils down to how much would the Note 4 need to cost for it to have notably less issues than the competition? How much would it need to cost for some of that cost to be directed at higher quality control? $1000? $1200? $2000?

from the IV✒

Depends on what you mean by notably less. Look at what safety and/or mission critical pieces of gear cost to get an idea. That level would make the N4 cost significantly higher than $2000 and is certainly overkill. But let's just say quality & reliability improvements drove the cost to $1000 - what would their sales numbers look like at that level? How many people are willing to pay a premium for a device they will likely replace in 2 years time?

Or less...

Verizon is the cheapest, att most expensive. Others are somewhere in the middle

I must admit I'm finding this thread entertaining. At least the discussion is staying civil which is great. I think the expectation of quality with higher price is natural but 800 for a phone like this really isn't that much higher considering the feature set. Look at the nexus line, prices are going up significantly each generation. The screen on the Note 4 surpasses all others. Add on the active stylus, expandable storage and replaceable battery along with the ability to add on wireless charging and how can one possibly compare an iPhone to it on feature set?

Quality yes.... I would expect nothing less than better quality numbers from Apple, they make what, a few mobile devices? There's different variations of the iPhone but they are all essentially the same. The reduced number of product types with higher production volume should give better yield I would think. I've never been a fan of Samsung's shotgun approach to products but it works for them so we can't change that.

It is a good thread. No doubt the vendors have done significant homework on developing pricing curves for these devices and it would be interesting to see where the knees in their projections are.
