Note 4 versus LG V20

LG V20 is newer, faster and I like its screen better. It has all the key attributes of Note 4 that I've come to expect:

* Removable 10,000 battery
* 16:9 screen ratio with no stupid curved edges

Yet I keep my Note 4, why. two reasons, firstly, Note 4 is considerably cheaper. I just scored a like-new in box Verizon Note 4 for $115, that's a steal. You get a fantastic set of features for that low price. Yeah it's 4 years old but still keeps running.

The second reason I am worried about the dreaded bootloop problem that has affected LG V10 and not sure at this point of V20 is just as affected. In light of this, Note 4 seems like a great deal at this point.

Yes there is that Knox annoyance you have to turn off to preserve the battery runtime.

When V20 drops into the Note 4 price range a few years from now, I will likely upgrade to it.

I can assure you, the V20 doesn't have the bootloop that the G4 and V10 had. Other than common screen retention, it's been a largely flawless device.

Not sure if you read the specs wrong, or are referring to aftermarket options, but the V20 only comes with a 3,200mAh battery. You can order up to 10,000mAh batteries, but you're looking at about $50 for one and a large size increase. I'm running a 6,700mAh battery in mine now.

To clarify, both NOte 4 and V20 are upgradable to aftermarket supersized ZeroLemon extended batteries that are 10,000 in capacity.

I have gotten Note 4 several times. Both times I got "new"old stock with the battery being hopelessly dead. After sitting somewhere in storage for 4 years. One got 2 hour runtime, the other 4.
I got ZeroLemon and it generates 2-day runtime. So did the V20 version if I recall correctly.

IMO the stock battery is just about wortheless even when new. Just give yourself a huge favor and order something aftermarket. ZeroLemon is my fav brand but there are others too, like I hear Mugen is very good (and expensive).

IMO the V20 is better in approximately every way imaginable.

Not that I disagree but just wonder what logic led you to that conclusion.

Firstly, it's 2 years newer than Note 4, having been introduced sept 2016 versus Sept 2014.

More RAM, better processor. I never had issues with my V10 until it self-bricked. I thought the screen of V-series was superior to Note 4, which is very sharp, but kind of bland (on all settings).

I really like the user interface of Vxx. Note 4 is a bit confusing.

The V20 has better specs, better audio, better software, ironically - better support, a better camera, it's almost across the board a better device from a hardware and user experience standpoint. The sole thing going in favor of the Note 4 is the S-Pen.

The main thing going for Note 4 is the price. You can get them NIB for $150 and like-NIB for $115, check your favorite online auction.

And I don't use the S-pen.

Does the V20 IPS LCD screen consume less power than Note 4's Super AMOLED? Theoretically IPS consumes more power but I get great runtime with V20.

I can finally compare Note 4 and V20 side by side.

Note 4 has better, richer colors, more vibrant screen.
That's about all. I don't care for the stylus.

Everything else favors the V20.

AMOLED only sees a real benefit with dark themes. From reports I've seen, real world use (watching videos, playing games, browsing online, etc), there isn't much darkness and power consumption is about the same as an LCD. I saw one or two reports claiming AMOLED consumed more power than LCD when comparing bright white to bright white screens.

Nice necro thread datum :) I'd forgotten about this one. You're liking the V20 more then? Agree with Mooncatt, power consumption is going to be negligible at best.

Yeah, I like V20 more. It's faster, the power button is in the right place. The sound is much better.
It uses the more modern USB-C type.

The V20 screen looks a bit odd, color-wise. Which doesn't matter for text or emails. Note 4 screen PQ is very nice. The blacks are more natural. The white color looks a bit more odd versus V20 however. All in all, the advantages of V20 outweigh the disadvantages. It's 2 years newer. An eternity in phone design.

I get a very solid day of runtime on the ZeroLemon extended battery with V20, in fact it keeps going. Maybe it will run to 1.5 or even 2 days if I let it run instead of recharging when it gets to 50%. Thus far seems very promising. To me, runtime is very important.

Note 4 gets less. But maybe that's because its external battery is worn out. Not sure. These things do wear out. They are not an infinite device and can only take an X number of cycles.

My anecdotal evidence suggests V20 runs longer than Note 4 on same-sized battery. I think the stupid Knox built-in app is depleting the Note 4 battery, or something and you cannot disable it without root, I tried. We are talking 10,000 mAh extended batteries here in both phones. I disabled as much bloatware in Note 4 as I could.

Note 4 is not a bad buy for around $100, even today, if in great/NIB shape. It's a great first phone for kids/teenagers. However, V20 in the same condition is not much more expensive, between 150-200 and probably totally worth it. Either one IMO is a better buy these new and expensive phones.

I've had S8 Plus for 1.5 years. Nothing but aggravation. It's _very_ slippery. Careful as I was, ended up dropping it anyway, sent it in for screen repair. I realize you can get an Ottercase, etc. Definitely not a phone for kids. It feels like you are holding a thin piece of ice. What a stupid design. I don't care for finger printer sensors or wireless charging.

The screen is nice PQ-wise but the 18.5:9 ratio is stupid. Runtime is nowhere near what you get with a 10K ZeroLemon. Curved edge makes me constantly delete apps from the edge, by accident. S8 Plus is a nice phone for sure but I just never really enjoyed it with all of its design warts. Curved edge is a bug, not a feature.
All in all, Note 4, dated as it is, is less aggravating than the S8/S9/S10 and latest-greatest Notes, IMO.
