Note 8.0 Tether Question

Is anyone using the Note 8.0 over a significant length of time tethered to their SmartPhone?

How well does this work? Are there any frustrations or glitches I should be aware of? How quickly does it drain your smartphone's battery?

Here's my dilemma. I'm looking to purchase a Note 8.0 in the next couple of weeks, but currently own an HTC Evo 4g with a broken charger port. I love my Evo, but because the port is broken, I can't root my Evo to get free wireless tethering.

So my thought process is to purchase a new Galaxy S3 along with a few backup batteries. I'm hoping to root the S3, set up free wireless tethering and use the s3 essentially as my phone and more importantly wireless hotspot for the Note 8.0.

I'm looking to find out if anyone is doing this. And if you would suggest a better phone option than the S3. I'm figuring the ability to have a removeable battery is important so I can always have my hotspot charged.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Anything I'm not thinking of?

Thanks for any help you might offer.

I do this with my galaxy nexus at work. There isn't any problem I encounter in the utilization. As you stated, battery life on your handset will be a concern.
The S3 would be fine, I suppose. I would personally consider the Note 2, however, as the battery life on that phone is probably the best you'll find.

I tether with my S3 and have no problems. Having an extra battery is probably a good idea because it does use up your battery.

I tether to my GS lll also, it does eat up some battery. Have no problems connecting to it though.

When you tether through your SIII are you rooting and using free tethering? If so...which tethering app are you using? Or are you using the tethering services offered by your provider?

I'm using FoxFi on my phone and just enable 4G and then turn on the Mobile Hotspot. The tablet then will see the FoxFi connection and you just connect to it in Settings. No I'm not Rooted.

Im rooted on my note 2 and use the stock hotspot app.

I'm using a note 2 on verizon, stock, and use foxfi daily. you can download a foxfi proxy app that runs in the foxfi background to try to hide usage if thats a concern for you :) If i'm set up someplace for a long period of time with the foxfi going i'm tempted to plug my phone in during....however, my note 2 has awesome battery life and i haven't had a huge problem. I can be a little compulsive though so I always carry a new trent battery backup.....caught in an elevator, or zombie apocalypse with nothing to do, not me :)

Thanks for the feedback. I have Sprint..and was concerned that they somehow blocked the free tether apps from working.

The playstore has removed foxfi and other known free tethering apps at certain carrier requests. That doesnt mean you cant get them. Foxfi, which is listed quite frequently here on these forums can be downloaded from the foxfi website and is a simple side load. Just tick the checkbox to install from unknown sources in the settings tab of your device.

I think foxfi comes as a 7 day trial, after that you can buy the unlock key still in the playstore.

Here is the link for the app.
