note 8 screen burn in

Yes.. the restriction is the far right end of that brightness setting that the manufacturer (Samsung) limited the brightness to.

Samsung set the low end and the high end... you should be able to use it however you want. They also set the high end when set to Auto Brightness to over 1000nits so you’d think they know what they are doing right? And I say this respectfully.

It’s not unusual for people For many people to get any phone and set the screen to max... I use to do it all the time with phones So Samsungs aware of what type of owners they’ll have and when endurance testing their phones... more for warranty support than anything else probably, they test things like battery and display maxed out to make sure they are within levels to last the one year warranty that they are responsible for them lol.

The warning near max bright levels are not to say you’ll wear the screen... the warning is to warn about your eyes. No where in manual does it say do not keep at max brightness for too long in fear of screen degradation.

That being said, people are aware OLEDS can ghost and/or burn in images. So it’s us that warn not to max it out. I do it just to be safe because I do fear burn in and have seen it on many Samsung Demos at stores. But anyone that feels like they want to max out should be without people saying they shouldn’t or their fault.

My wife got her iPhone X and with it being Apples first OLED and she’s a heavy WeChat user almost always seeing the app up more than her home screenI told her you might wanna lower your brightness or change screens now and then cause OLEDS are notorious...

She said, “No matter. If it happens, It’s under warranty.” She’s right.

Enjoy your phone.

Thanks for the input.
Happy Holidays

Anyone having problems with burn in on their note 8? I've only had mine for about a month and some change but I'm already seeing really bad burn in

Yep. Just noticed today. Mine is a solitaire game I play. I now have rectangles burned into 2/3 of my screen.

Yeah me too. Looks like the Bixby notification which i never use  Will try and get a replacement as it's only 2 months old.

how high do you have your brightness setting, Roseward? Just curious - I've had mine since Sept 7 and have no burn in. I use the phone pretty heavily too. I typically keep brightness around 50% but occasionally a little higher or lower depending on variables

I've used mine on auto brightness since I got it. had it about a month, and no issues so far.

While I'm sure we would all prefer that our phone screens would never burn in, no matter how high we keep the brightness, and no matter how long we leave the screen sitting with a static image on it, the reality is that these OLED and AMOLED displays are subject to burn.

It's a fact due to the physics of the technology as it currently exists. The new LG UHD TVs with their beautiful displays are suffering from it. Phones and other devices with these displays are suffering from it.

So given that it is a fact, but given that I really like the look of the display on my expensive Note 8, I choose to use settings that will help protect the display. I use auto brightness, set the nav bar to hide, shut the phone off when I'm not looking at it, etc. I hope this will make the display stay good for as long as possible.

I use other expensive gadgets, and as with this phone, I take steps to protect them. And yes, sometimes taking these precautions limits the ways I can use them, or creates some inconvenience for me. But that's always the way with any device.

As a friend of mine used to point out when folks complained that their vehicles suffered various failures when they drove the heck out of them, or didn't take reasonable precautions: "It's only a machine!"

For me, the fact that I paid so much for the gadget is something that encourages me to take better care of it, not worse. If these phones only cost $50, I would probably go without a screen protector, no case, and might not bother trying to avoid screen burn. But as it is, the high cost of the phones is probably what makes a lot of us use a case and even screen protector.

If you use a case and/or screen protector, why not also use settings to protect from screen burn?

But if you are outside in full sun a lot, or using apps that keep static images on the screen all of the time, it would be nice to have some kind of intelligent protection built in to the phone, or an app that could detect this kind of use and try to protect the display.

On the one hand, I want to use the gadget as I wish, for as long as I wish. But on the other hand, I understand it's limitations, and want to protect it as much as is practical.

I guess the question is: Does Samsung do enough to warn people of, or automatically protect people from, screen burn?

They could simply lower the max brightness, and then suffer lower review ratings for screen brightness. Or they could make the display auto-dim, and make people mad that way. Or, they can just let us fry our phones as we see fit, and suffer from complaints as the damage happens.

If they knew that screen burn was a possibility, should they have built in some warnings? Or should they have made warnings in the documentation? It's hard to know what would have been the best route for Samsung. But I guess, as a consumer, I'd prefer that they give me the appropriate warnings. That might not be the best from a PR point of view, but it still seems like the right thing to do.

I just created an account for the same reason. Note 8. 64gb Tmobile model. Screen Burn in that appears as if there's a keyboard on my screen when there's clearly not.

Don't turn your screen brightness over half way very often and if u do, don't keep it on one screen for very long

Mines usually at 40 to 50 %. In car usually lower esp when it's dark outside

Screen burn is one reason I got rid of my LG V20 for the Note8. It was horrendous on the LG. I didn't run full brightness or keep always on either and that was an IPS panel.

If running full brightness is that bad manufactures should put a warning, much like the annoying one with the audio volume on BT connections.

Been reading through the thread, the negativity towards each other is pretty sad.

Came in after noticing lots of burn in spots on my screen. I'll post a photo tomorrow, but it appears to be from a game (a three match game), and menu type symbols at the base. I had never heard of this problem with these screens, never heard any warnings when getting the phone or reading the documentation. the only time I heard of burn in was old (and cheap) pc monitors and plasma tvs......including the Mitsubishi 50" I bought in 2003 and still use heavily, which has never experienced a problem.

As for brightness, I keep it fairly high, otherwise I get too much eye strain. Especially outdoors. But generally speaking, I rarely keep the screen on for extended periods, don't watch much media, etc.

I have the Tmobile version. This is a refurbished as I had to do a warranty exchange with the first one. And this one has the worst burn in of any phone I've ever owned in my life. Tmobile have me such a hard time over the last exchange that I think I'll just live with it and get the Note 9 when it comes out.

But it's bad. You might can't see it in the screenshot but is so you can see the top of Facebook messenger burned in.

I have the AT&T vesion I preorder when it came out but about a month ago I notice that when ever I have a page that is white in the background I can see burn ins I can see is the Youtube app, I can see the boxes for the videos and I can also see the bigger box that play the videos, is theres a way to get it back to normal or once it happens that's it? I started seeing it after the oreo update not sure if it has something to do with it.

I first noticed it on mine in Feb, purchased phone on release date. Had VZW replace it, and the replacement has it already, just 3 months later. You can't get a screenshot of it because it's a hardware issue, and the screenshot is a digital image of the information the screen is showing. I took photos of my first N8 with my old N5, but it doesn't show very well (I'll try to post them tonight). Haven't taken any pics of this phone yet.

Didn't have Oreo on that phone or this one.

I doubt I'm going to bother trying to get this replaced because it was such a pita dealing w/VZW. I'll probably just keep it as my backup phone when the N9 comes out. Tho it's royally pissiing me off for a $1K phone. Kicker is, the nav bar is the worst part, which I rarely have showing.

Meh.
