Hi everyone,

Just received my S22 ultra and enjoying it for the most part but I remember some people talking about a lesser known advantage was the haptic feedback and notification vibration was supposed to be a lot better

From my experience it is the same at best anyone else notice this, was this improvement to this feature abandoned or am I just not seeing it on the settings?

I have everything at full vibration and I gotta no difference at all

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

I don't think it is something that has a setting or that can be adjusted. From what I've seen in the teardown videos it's a lateral vibrator similar to apples, I can't remember what they call theirs, which is known for their outstanding haptics. From my understanding it vibrates side to side vs round and round and somehow that provides a better experience...? But yeah it's a kind, a style, an experience, not a setting.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Thanks for the reply,it's just disappointing because I had heard of the outstanding haptics but that has not been my experience, in fact I'm still missing calls and texts when the phone is in my pocket

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

I'm not sure where it is but try searching, vibration or haptic, in settings and see if you can make it stronger would be my only suggestion. With my very own device on the way I'm disappointed to hear that the haptics might not be that great, especially after the hype.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Well that's a bummer. I really noticed a difference between the S20U and S21U in this regard.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

I'm going to try to keep searching but there is not much else I can do I have everything at maximum

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Not being an iPhone user and having almost never touched a handset it's hard to imagine what could be so great about the haptic feedback. Personally I turn it off for almost everything right out of the box because it is annoying and in some small way it cost me battery life. Having said that though I was a bit curious what to expect with the S22 since it has this new haptic engine more closely resembling Apple's offering.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

My experience so far is that it is the same, waiting to hear others experience with this, and vibration strength as I said not feeling it much while it's in my pocket

Oh I need haptic feedback I don't like not feeling key presses at all. Best haptics ever I felt was Pixel 6 Pro

In settings >sounds and vibration >vibration intensity is all bars up ?Screenshot_20220219-202514_Settings.jpg

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Good haptics have nothing to do with brute vibrations. In fact those stronger, make your phone slide off the table rumbles are an example of bad haptic engines. When reviewers talk haptics they're mostly referring to how tight the vibration is, and how much it gives the user the sensation that the vibration is mimicking (think pressing a button). The best example I can think of is mentioned in the article below. But it's how modern trackpads on laptops don't actually press down. They're just panes of glass. If the haptics are good, you never realize the glass isn't actually moving. It feels just like pressing down on a button. So the software and haptic engine work together to know just how long, and how much force is needed to convey the feeling they're replicating. Granted, I can definitely understand why the tighter vibrations that you can't feel rumbling in your pocked or hear from your bag mean they're worse, but they are actually doing the job that they were intended to do.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Ok thanks for the reply and detailed description, what I may try to do is try different vibration patterns and stick with the one that I can feel the most while in my pocket

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Look at 6 minute 30 second mark in this video. MKBHD talks about how Samsung went with a z-axis vibration motor to an x-axis motor and if they did that with the Ultra then you are going to get a disappointing feeling as shown in his table example.

Can you copy that table test and give us your feedback?

I feel that if Samsung made the change to all models that this is a really big blunder. Direction is everything.

So you're saying that it's going to be a step down from a S21 Ultra?

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

From the sound of his review yes it is and from my experience compared to the note 20 ultra I agree with him I find the vibration not as strong and I am missing notifications because of it

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

If you rely on the haptic feedback and a strong vibration for notification over setting your volume high for your notifications, or rely on feeling your phone vibrate when your phone is in your pocket and it rings, it will probably be a step down for some if it doesn't have the same effectiveness right?

MKBHD said he missed a number of notifications just from the way if vibrates now. I personally don't rely in haptic feedback as much as volume so might not be a big issue... just have to adjust/relearn to the new level/feel of it.

Re: Haptic feedback and notification vibration

Yea but it was supposed to be improved, not go a step back. This would be false advertising. And no I could care less about in my pocket or when it rings, I like haptic feedback for general touch screen use.

Well you know how marketing guys are... they read the spec on the hardware and it says 10% stronger vibration over last years... that parts true. They just don't know that repositioning it off axis reduces overall feeling of vibration 10% over last years phone lol.
