Notifications in Silent mode

Hi, recently bought a Sony Smartwatch 3. I'm getting a little frustrated with the notification settings. I'm finding it very annoying that if you set the phone to silent (as I will do at work) you then get absolutely no notifications on the smartwatch. This seems really counter-intuitive, you can only get notifications if the watch also vibrates so it's going to be pretty useless for me day to day with needing to silence it at work. I know you can mute the phone and only get vibration notifications on the watch, I would rather that I could silence both phone and watch, and check watch for notifications discreetly. Anyone know a way around this? This new priority mode is so over complicated, what happened to good old silent mode......

I have the note 5 and the LG G Watch. For Gmail for example, I set it to notifications on, but set the ring tone do "silent"
I disable vibrate
The email will show on my watch but no vibrate regardless of mode.
