Notifications

When I get notifications I usually clear them as they pop up, or I clear all. The same notifications pop up again even though I've cleared them. I really only need to be notified one time but I can't figure out how to make this stop.

Anyone else experience this and if so any thoughts on how to correct?

Which notifications are you referring to in particular?
Google tends to be annoying with its traffic and weather notifications so I've turned those off completely (since I haven't seen any configuration options).
3rd party applications may allow you to configure the notification frequency, etc.

I have shut off most app notifications, but from the ones I allow usually emails and calendar reminders.

I'm sorry, I do not have a Pixel 2 device in my possession of yet; so I can only estimate that it could be under "Sounds and Notifications" or you could go into your app-specific settings; either by going into the app and selection from there, or by the Settings app itself (ie, going to the Settings app; hitting something like "Apps;" and then selecting the app in question and seeing something like the following screenshot (taken from my Honor 8):
