Nougat Battery Drain

Yeah, I don't have much choice. It's the theory of "it's doing something and that will eventually finish". I have disabled a number of packages with Package disabler pro, but that's not going to help. Nor does "power saving" mode help, since from what I have read, it mainly throttles the CPU a bit during use, but does nothing for idle and certainly won't stop the "something" from happening.

I got the Nougat update about 2 weeks ago. I backed everything up, did the update, immediately did a factory reset and reinstalled my apps and data.

I had great battery life until yesterday. I'm not sure what changed, but I had to charge my phone 3 times to make it thru the day. I think the culprit is Google Play Services as it suddenly sits near the top of my battery usage. I tried clearing the app cache and the partition cache. No luck.

I tried disabling the app and restarting the phone, but got warnings that the Play Store, Gmail & Maps wouldn't work without it. So I enabled it, same problem.

I then tried disabling the app again and this time I told the phone to restore Play Services to the factory version. I cleared the partition cache and restarted the phone. I was immediately told to update Play Services before anything would work, so I did.

The problem still persists. Any other ideas to try?

Bermuda: Even though my phone doesn't list any play services power draw like yours, I just disabled google play services and google play services for something-or-other to see if that helps me. I don't think it will help, but worth a shot.

I'm still over 2% per hour, instead of 1% or less before Nougat. Phone is warm sitting on my desk unused instead of room temperature. My millennial colleague makes fun of me for being upset about battery usage that most millennials would kill for.

I'm having same issue on my S8 plus. Wifi is fine. I get 10 hours SOT. As soon as I switch to mobile data the battery drains twice as fast as wifi. Even when phone is not in use. Doesn't matter location etc

Edit: 6 hours, 18% use, as bad as ever. The phone actually told me to reenable play services otherwise maps won't work. I am mildly impressed. I reenabled. Disabling google play services didn't save any battery.

Sahin_UK, I didn't get better battery life on WiFi. However I also had mobile data on along with Wifi. Even when I turned off LTE (only allowed GSM) and the phone said I had no service, I had large battery drain. The only way to stop the battery drain is airplane mode.

Oh good, my contact list is empty. Apparently the phone thinks that I need to sync up with the empty contact list that it saved after I factory reset. Anyone know how to turn off syncing, backup and every other bit of networking crap?
Edit: go to settings, accounts, google, and turn it all off. too late for my contacts though.

Ultra power saving mode? Nope, still chews 2 to 3% per hour depending on phase of the moon, weather or some other mysterious factor, not usage, not time of day, etc. The 112 hour estimated battery life for ultra power saving mode is a complete lie. Just more evidence of bugs in the OS.

After 11 hours, Device Idle is 10%, Android System is 9%. At 1% I have Cell standby, Android OS, Google Services, Screen, and Wi-Fi. But Wifi is off and has been off for a few days. Sprint forum "grand master" says take it into the Sprint store and have them reflash it. Not sure when I can get to a Sprint store.

I'm going to ignore the Sprint forum "grand master" and instead request that I get refreshed back to marshmallow. I don't need more superstition and assuming there is nothing wrong with nougat. I have read in this forum that I can flash marshmallow myself using Odin. Does anyone know if a Sprint store can reflash my phone back to marshmallow, or will I have to do that myself.

There was a system update. I downloaded, now it is installing... Installed. The software version says G920PVPS4DQE2 and G920PSPT4DQE2 Fully charged, disconnecting charger now...

Worse so far, at least 3% per hour idle drain. Device idle and Android System chewing up battery (i.e. a bug). I just wiped the cache and I am recharging.

I installed the GSAM app. It says held awake 2h14m and deep sleep 14m. Averages are doze time (light) 14h51m and doze time (deep) 38m20s App usage now down to 37% (started much higher). The app usage is all "combined". Like I have said above, it's not the apps since the same problem occurs in safe mode, "ultra" power saving mode with no apps and it happened after I factory reset before I installed any apps. The charts show medium phone signal and CPU freq bouncing around from 0.5 to 2.1 GHz.

On the regular battery screen the two highest uses are still Device idle and Android System. Android OS and Screen are 3rd and 4th but usually trivial.

4 hours, 13% drain using the Greenify app. I didn't expect improvement since Greenify supposedly just stops apps and running safe mode and "ultra" power saving mode without most apps made no difference. Highest usage again: Device idle and Android System.

I went in the Sprint store at 9AM this morning. The nice young woman took a look at the phone, commented on the worthless battery monitor apps. I agreed although GSAM is not completely worthless. She said they cannot flash the phone back to marshmallow nor reflash nougat. She also said she had an older android tablet that has the exact same problem (idle battery drain not related to any apps). She said we have to wait for an update from Samsung.

My battery life was amazing after the Nougat update. Then I downloaded & installed the update that included the May 1st security patch about 5 days ago. My phone froze a day after updating and just went black. It then got stuck in a bootloop for about an hour. After getting it back on the battery life is horrible!!! I backed up everything with Samsung Smart Switch & completely reset the device. Reinstalled Apps & Set up everything as it once was. And battery still sucks. They really need to fix this ASAP. My sot went from 3h 30m to 1h 30m if I'm lucky. I haven't changed my usage patterns or anything. This sucks big time.

Yeah, my phone is not in use much. My idle battery drain is pretty much 3X the drain under MM. But when I do use the phone, mainly taking and emailing pictures, it also seems to be about 3X the drain, more or less. I can literally watch the battery drop about two percent with each picture/email.

This weekend I tried the settings -> general management -> reset -> reset settings. It keeps data but turns on all the annoying beeps and buzzes as well as many useless features which I have to turn off. The phone seemed to behave well for an hour on battery but then went back to nougat-power-sucking mode.

For me, clearing the cache and reboot helps a lot...for a day or two. It has to be an app, and I'm pretty sure it's a 1st party app like Google play services or something.

**Update**
I definitely agree here. Google Play Services was always at the top of my list and I'd occasionally see Samsung Push Service. Well Google Play Services finally updated for me. And that helped a little. Well before bed last night I checked for more updates and low and behold there was one for Samsung Push Services. (It's happened before where it has eaten through battery) but I didn't think it was happening again. Especially after a reset. I have just taken my phone off the charger & I'll report back later today if anything changes, but so far it looks promising.

my battery is horrible! I was fully charged before work and with only using it to receive/send 2 text messages and I brief phone call I was at 65% after an 8 hr work day. I was going to wait to upgrade to the S8 but this battery issue is driving me crazy!

Here's my update: no change. Sprint store can't do anything (except admit that it is a problem for some devices). factory reset doesn't help, nor reset setting, nor clear cache, nor safe mode, nor getting rid or disabling all my apps, nor ultra power saving mode, nor turning off LTE or wifi or bluetooth. Only airplane mode stops the drain.

As an experiment right now I am trying airplane mode but with wifi turned back on.

result --> Seemed to use substantial power with airplane mode plus wifi. I guess the next thing is to try just airplane alone again. I have done that for two weeks or so. Obviously the phone in airplane mode is useless.
