Now I have to start with a password.

I was trying to connect with my home wi-fi network and tried entering a VCN. Now every time I turn on the device I have to enter the password even with wi-fi off. How can I remove the password or change it? I have a Nexus 7 with Android 4.2.

If the only way to do that is a hard reset, how can I backup my apps and data first?

If the VCN has requirements for a password lock, it will not allow you to turn the password off. Same thing will happen if you try and sync an Activesync account with a password requirement (your business email for example.) You can't disable the lock requirement until you delete the account.

One thing you can try is to install the "No Lock" app. It will automatically bypass the lock screen.

I think what he's saying is that he mistakenly put in a password for the Nexus....

I entered a password in a profile and somehow that became a password for the device at power on.

The problem is solved. One may simply turn off the Screen Lock by choosing "None" under Lock Screen Security.
1. At the Home screen, touch the All Apps button.
2. Open the Settings app.
3. Choose Security.
4. Choose Screen Lock.
5. If a screen lock is already set, you must trace the pattern or type the PIN or password to continue.
6. The Choose Lock Screen window lists six types of lock settings:
? None: The screen doesn?t lock. Even the Unlock-button-and-locking-ring thingy doesn?t show up. Choosing this option disables all locks.
? Slide: The Nexus 7 simply uses the standard locking screen: Slide the Unlock button to the unlocking ring.
? Face Unlock: Use the front camera on the Nexus 7 to use your adorable face as the unlocking mechanism.
? Pattern: To unlock the tablet, you must trace a pattern on the touchscreen.
? PIN: The Nexus 7 is unlocked by typing a personal identification number (PIN).
? Password: You must type a password to unlock the Nexus 7.
