NY Times app crashes when device is offline

I have a new Boox Palma running Android 11. On all my other devices, I can read from the NY Times app when the device is offline. However, on my Boox, the app crashes when I try to run it when the device is offline.

If I re-install the app, the problem goes away, briefly, like one round of article downloads and offline reading. But it is soon back to crashing only when offline (it works fine when online).

I'd like to fix this because I want to use my Palma for offline reading.

Welcome to Android Central! When you say the app crashes, do you mean that it actually closes unexpectedly or freezes? Or is it giving you an error message, saying that it's not currently connected to the web?
