Bump. Why can't we compile our own?

The version that verizon is supposed to release OTA has already been leaked, and I think is in some baked ROMs. But devs would rather add extra goodies on top, to make it even better.

Thank you herki and thebizz, for answering. I was very happy when I got my Droid that I didn't have to "jailbreak" it like the iPhone. I thought since it was based on open source things like this wouldn't be an issue. If it is a problem with bitfone, why not put the update on forums? If its abug why not let the community help out? I think if we (the consumers) could have a really open device to put any OS on it that we choose and not be bound by a carrier things wouldn't be this way. I say let it be truly open. Or maybe I just had too much to drink :)

I think the openness that android provides is towards manufacturers, not the end-level consumers. I'm willing to guess that manufacturers will always be against opening it up in that way for quality reasons. They'd rather have full control over the quality of the product interaction.

This may be a little shallow, but a part of me is regretting not waiting for the N1 to go AT&T (or Verizon) since I dropped AT&T and my iPhone for a Droid. I think I've taken it somewhat personally that the N1 had 2.1 from go with all the extra cool features Droid is still waiting for (and a few extras we won't be getting).

I just can't help but feel the slap in the face, in light of all the people who launched Droid into the #1 slot android phone. Given that Droid is responsible for the latest huge numbers for android, and that it outsold the N1 by a huge factor, it makes no sense to treat Droid users as second class citizens and continue to deny us the latest extras, goodies, and speedy improvements.

/end rant. Well, for today.

Trust me, you'll be glad you didn't go N1 on At&t. They're having a pretty big defective screen problem at the moment. I can't post a link, but go check Engadget or Boygenius

I feel similar about being slapped in the face. The Droid was hyped up like crazy, even more so over the N1 yet the N1 gets more love, more publicity and yet the Droid sold a **** ton more.

2.0.1 update to me personally was a huge slap in the face as it seemed like a half ass update. The update destroyed my phone making the browser unusable, extremely slow, extremely choppy, Battery died a lot quicker, everything about it just destroyed my Droids experience. That is of course before I rooted and installed Smoked Glass rom which I love.

Everyone that I know who has AT&T hate it, absolutely hate it so Ill never switch from Verizon. Verizon while expensive, the service is awesome. The N1 looks nice but I wont switch to it just for a little bit quicker processor and some ram. Not worth the huge price tag in my opinion especially when there will be another massive hyped phone out within a month(as it always is)

The update did the exact opposite for me. The browser was faster, and battery life was improved. I think my case is a lot closer to the standard then yours. The fact that you rooted the phone and it got better suggests to me that you had an app that was incompatible with 2.0.1, and the upgrade was affected by that. The 2.0.1 upgrade in itself was a great improvement to my Droid, and I'm happy to wait for 2.1 until it is right.

the same happened to me when i upgraded to 2.01 scrolling in the browser was horrible and the only thing that changed with rooting was using the milstone broswer with multitouch

The ONLY app I had on my phone at that time was Advanced Task Killer. So, for you to say that apps were possibly the cause, well, quite frankly Ill rule that out since 1 app was on my phone. I even tried it on my second droid and the update was terrible.

However, like you said, most ppl enjoyed the update, I personally just happened to be one of those who didnt. Even after using 2 droids, the update was bad. The MAIN reason I got the Droid was for the Browser experience. I like to surf the net a lot and well, that update absolutely destroyed that experience to the point of where I wanted to honestly sell the damn device. But, once I installed Smoked Glass, that experience changed and now that Opera is a browser that we can use. Its blazing fast. I love Opera and hope they implement the full app cause right now its barely beta and it runs 10x quicker then any browser Ive ever used. Even quicker then some PC browsers, its quite amazing

11 days...........Until we bitch some more. Or be really happy. I dunno! WEEEEE

LOL, I love all the people that are freaking out on here. If you NEED 2.1 so bad then root your phone and play with it. The 2.1 ROMs are really stable and I love mine.

Well, I shouldn't have to root my phone for 2.1. I should just have it by now. There's I suppose a minority of us that aren't interested in rooting our phones. Droid is the best selling android device and producing the highest marketshare among new android devices. It vastly outsold the Nexus One, it should at least be given the same OS version as that phone.

Imagine what kind of hell iPhone owners would raise if only the 3GS got 4.0 and 3G stayed with 3.1 for six months post release. HELL. I tell you.
