Official 6/28 Update Thread - Discuss Here

Just re-read the entire thread, and here's a summary of the apparent benefits and problems related to the update:

Benefits:

More responsive screen
Better WiFi
Grounding issue fixed
EAS security tweaks
Possibly better 4G performance
Better battery life (only for facebook users?)

Problems:

No unRevoked; I have a number of programs that rely on this.
No Free Tethering
No ShootMe (not really a big deal for me, but....)
No Titanium backup (root capabilities)
Lost stock Android Wallpapers
No way to turn off Sense (not a big deal to me, but...)
Possible issue with text entry in texting app (does this affect Handcent?)
Possible Accelerometer problem
Possible Skype problem

Risk of bricking phone with no replacements available.

I'm definitely holding of on this update for a while. The following issues didn't affect me:

WiFi (mine seems fine in the few places I can use it)
Screen Grounding (never had an issue)
Battery (I get 12 - 15 hours per charge, and don't use facebook anyway)
EAS (mine works fine, as my company doesn't have a security policy)

skype or swype?? I didnt know skype was available for the EVO?

Skype through Fring I do believe.. having issues connecting since update. Lost root access :(

Love that they lit up the 4g here in st. louis area however :).

Come on unrevoked we need an update. Please kind sir :)

ooooooooo booooooooy!

I tried and tried still cant update maybe this is a sign to wait lol because I am hearing too much conflicting reports of bricking phones , losing widgets e.t.c. I think I will wait and I have unrevoked and I dont want to lose it

Bricked phones...

When I updated my phone this morning it was stuck for what seemed like 10 minutes on the White EVO screen. I decided to wait it out and the phone eventually finished the update on it's own.

Is it possible that people with phones that are now bricked might have helped brick their phones by pulling the battery / rebooting the phone prematurely?

What about the people who wasn't physically near their phone when it went dead?

What about the people who wasn't physically near their phone when it went dead?

Those are the unlucky ones that have to go get a new one/get it reflashed at a Sprint repair center. There is a small percentage of this happening that is acceptable to all electronics manufacturers and happens on nearly all devices.

I have no idea. I was just asking a question and also trying to let other people know that the update can take a while and the phone will look like it's not responding when, in fact, it is.

Also, after my update was done, my phone was a bit...odd. So I rebooted it and it has been running great ever since.

I know I would feel like crap if my phone was bricked by the update. I hope everyone gets their phones back up and running!!

I got even WORSE battery life, wtf!!!!!

i've never used facebook, but this update has changed something about my battery use. i'm now 61/4 hrs with 70% battery remaining. my battery time today since i updated is clearly more than doubled. usually i've had to recharge after 4 hrs, once after just over 3 hrs and only once did i get 6hrs before having to recharge.

I just checked my battery, I recharged the phone up to 100% after doing the update and it has been 3h01m58s since I unplugged it and I have 95% left with normal usage (for me) but I would normally be down to about 88% by now.

I was happy with my battery life before but was slightly upset I couldn't use things like live wallpaper and other slightly battery draining things. If this update makes battery life good enough so that I can use those things, I will be quite excited and so far it is looking good.

Interesting WiFi results here.

I have two wireless routers in my house.
1 is a B/G with a high gain antenna sitting about 3 feet away from me 2462 MHz.
2 is a B/G/N 3 rooms away 40' or so 2437 MHz.

Pre update:
Router 1 (holding in hand) -68dBm (on desk) -70 dBm 11.21 MBps down 2.83 MBps up
Router 2 (holding in hand) -91dBm (on desk) -83 dBm 3.24 MBps down 2.81 MBps up

Post update:
Router 1 (holding in hand) -68dBm (on desk) -69 dBm 13.06 MBps down 1.00 MBps up
Router 2 (holding in hand) -87dBm (on desk) -86 dBm 1.91 MBps down 1.87 MBps up

These were bests of about 5 tests each. Many of the post update tests on Router 2 were much slower with the up speed being 4x faster than the down. one test was 0.46 down 2.10 up.

For everyone wanting hard numbers there you go.

Definitely another one bites the dust...took it in to sprint and they ordered me another one for pickup, tomorrow.

The signal strengths are good hard numbers, the speeds aren't really. Anything could be causing your connection speed to the outside internet to drop, including the kid next door torrenting.
