[Official] Gingerbread on June 3

sooo...what's the deal with z4root. i'm using to allow a hotspot app to run. will it work with gingerbread, or is their a version that will work? no desire to do a full root to make just one program run.

thanks

I am currently running a stock rooted ROM (3.70.651.1, I am not sure if this is the correct way to identify a ROM) with a (2.6.32.27-netarchy-toastmod-4.3.1-cfs-havs-nosbc) kernel that I flashed. When the new rooted Gingerbread ROM becomes available here and I flash it to my phone will this automatically replace the current kernel that I have installed now?

Yes

Also will amon ra be able to be used to flash this new ROM and if so will instructions be available on how to do so?

Yes

Another question I have is I haven't rooted my wife's phone yet...will that phone be given the option to NOT except the new OTA download of Gingerbread when it becomes available next week so that I can still use the current methods of rooting a 2.2 phone? Is there an option that I need to turn off so that it doesn't automatically except the new update?

it should popup and ask if you want to download now. choose no.

To answer your first set of questions, yes it will replace your kernel to the default htc kernel and you can use Amon RA to flash it.

If you want to see how to flash it click on the last link in my signature. An OG from the forums Jerzyiroc made the vid and its very informative.

The last question about your wife's phone is you don't have to accept the upgrade. It gives you an option to accept it or not.

I will start checking around 6am on Friday and every hour until it's available. Looking forward to the GB upgrade.I will post my results once the upgrade is downloaded and installed.

I rooted my EVO with unrevoked. I think i will wait for the rooted version of official Gingerbread. But I have no clue how to install it once it comes out. Can someone help me understand how to do that? is there an app that I need to install to be able to load a ROM?

what time did the Froyo update come to the EVO? i seem to remember it was late the night before, no? anybody remember? we could search the old thread but might be hard to find.

Very simple. When you download the rom you want to put it on your sd card. Once you do that you will want to go into recovery. I take it you are on a rooted stock rom so you will need to power off the phone. Hold Volume down + the Power Button at the same time until you get to your bootloader screen ( screen with 3 skateboarding androids). Wait for it to check for a PC36IMG and then scroll down to Recovery. Once there I highly recommend you back a Nandroid (backup) once done you will NEED to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. Next select from sd card and select the rom. Once done reboot and you now have the 2.3 rom.

If you need a visual aid then look at my sig. I have a vid from Jerzyiroc on how to flash.

Will this update include an updated version of sense?

we don't think so because it appears that this version is the same version of a leaked update which did not. apparently, we are not missing that much.

can't wait either, it is about time!! i know there will not be many visual improvements, hopefully under the hood things are fixed/improved.

There is an announcement on the official htc forum, where its posted that the update will include Sense 2.1.

Quote:
From what I've heard it will be Sense 2.1
EVO won't ever have Sense 3.0 because it's too large for the phone and was designed for tablets.
This will be Android 2.3.3 (I believe 2.3.4 is a Google specific version for their Nexus phones only.
It should not wipe apps and data but if you want to wait, I will post back here after I've done the update (or I'll add to the sticky) regarding that tomorrow after I update mine.

Not sure how accurate or official this is.
