[Official] Gingerbread Update - Bugs, New Apps, etc.

Repeating mistakes made by other carriers was not going to be acceptable by the EVO community. This update addresses some of the pressing concerns by the EVO community. Once we are satisfied no major issues are associated with current upgrade we will proceed with 2.3.4 If no major issues other than Netflix you can expect June 9th 2.3.4 OTA update.

2.3.4 will include:
1) Landscape for home screen
2) Gingerbread keyboard option
3) Further performance improvements
4) Video chat (Google)
5) Sense UI update

Like EVO 3D we are listening to what the expectations are from the community.
BSOD
P.S. Netflix will be updated and streaming ASAP as this issue is being resolved. Expect an update with in 24hrs at the latest Monday June 6th.

It would probably be in your (or anyones) best interest to not rely on anything BSOD says. His reliability/credibility has very much been called into question. I believe he has even been moderated a couple times because of such.

Those who cannot update and/or get force close errors.

If you are getting random reboots and force closes, OR if you cannot get past the CHECKING status when looking for the GB update, try a factory reset. Go to settings>SD/Phone storage>factory reset.

EDIT: dont forget to back up everything you want to keep!

I had trouble updating, i did this and the update worked fine.
After my update, i was getting weird force close errors for all kinds of apps and google services, and the occasional sense reboot, i did the reset AGAIN, and all of that went away.

Those of you who still have bad battery life after this, try uninstalling your data heavy apps and reinstalling them, then make sure to go through all the settings for each app and optimize the update schedules.

And for CH**ST's sake, stop asking questions and complaining about issues that have already been addressed, it clogs up the thread. This thread doesnt need to be 33 pages long.

On a brighter note, i hope we do get the new sense and until today, my noob self didnt even know we COULD stream Netflix, cant wait til they fix it!

PS- my first post, hello androidcentral and members and moderators!

Hmmmm.... Ok. I will keep that in mind. Nevermind about that post then.

This make a lot of sense. With all the missing features... This isn't the complete Gingerbread in its entirety. Ps. Those who have the (gingerbread keyboard) installed. The one from the Android market, it does now have the missing copy & paste that we are getting in the original (soon to be here) gingerbread.keyboard And another thing I've notice the fonts and stock keyboard seem smaller. I guess we just have to get use to it. Overall.. I'm liking the update thus far.

Yeah, if you read a page or so later a moderator even states that people should be cautious with the information BSOD posts. He claims to be an insider and at one point (month or so ago) the moderators asked him to send them some proof. As far as I know (which isn't saying much) that proof was never provided.

I'm not going to say he is full of it (in my opinion he has had some accurate guesses). Just saying, take it with a grain of salt.

I have a Nexus S running Gingerbread and Netflix works just fine so I don't understand your argument about the app not being optimized for Gingerbread.
That's wonderful, but if u read the 1st page of this thread or read thoroughly through this thread u would've seen that a prevalent issue with a lot of members is Netflix not working since the update to 2.3.3, so while it maybe optimized for gingerbread on the nexus S, there is obviously some issue between the Netflix app and gingerbread on the EVO 4G.

This is an EVO thread in the EVO forum about EVO users feedback regarding an EVO OS update. I don't see the point of u mentioning how something is working on your nexus.

Furthermore, my point was that just because a 3rd party app stopped working or had its settings a bit messed up, be it Netflix and handcent like some here are reporting or launcher pro like I stated in my original post I didn't see things like that as real valid reasons to disparage the update as some people were doing. Some were labeling it as buggy because of things like this, and I didn't agree with that assessment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but to me a buggy update would be one that caused major instability (random reboots, force closes) or a major downgrade in performance and usability (battery dying rapidly, can't make or receive calls or txts or complete bricking of a device)

You know I find it very strange that I can't find any information about this update on either HTC or Sprints web site. You would think that they would have updated the sites by now..

HamRadioNut

If this is true,I will jump for joy,but I guess we'll have to wait until June 9.

2.3.4 would be great, but why would Sprint bother with developing a 2.3.3 release if it was going to be replaced 3 days later? Wouldn't they be better off focusing all their bug testing efforts on one update?

I hope Blu is correct, but I don't see it happening. We'll find out in a few days...

Uninstall gingerbread

Anyone know how to uninstall gingerbread? i personally do not care for it.
Thanks

Thanks!

I had the same issue, HTC Sense kept force closing and kept trying to restart. What I did was went to market.android.com and downloaded launcher pro and when you press home it lets you decide between HTC Sense and launcher pro. I chose launcher pro went to settings and manage apps, in the All apps tab I cleared the data for HTC Sense and it finally loaded after that. It pretty much makes HTC sense back to factory default. Hope that works!

Thank you so much that worked great! My EVO is running great now!

Google Contacts not Syncing

Since upgrade my contacts no longer sync with google contacts. I've made sure all my syncs are checked in settings but still no luck. Calendar & Docs syncing as usual. I also use a Galaxy Tab. Contacts sync fine with that. I was setup so no matter where I made changes on my contacts (EVO, TAB or on Google), all 3 places would get the same change so I didn't have top do each one separately. Any ideas?
Everything else working fine. Lots of little changes made phone that much nicer to use.

i had a similar problem when i updated from Eclair to Froyo. the only thing that worked for me was a hard reset factory fresh then reinstalled and synced everything back manually one by one. (not restoring via a back up app). it was a PIA but it did the trick.

just talked to Sprint. The guy I talked to seem very knowledgeable. He said 4G connection is one of the known problems. HTC is working on a fix. He said 2.3.4 is a rumor. When these bugs are fixed, a new update will be pushed out.

Ok guys... Lets be realistic here. 1) Obviously this update (gingerbread) isn't complete as yet. 2) We are missing some features that was mention to be in gingerbread for the EVO. (especially the gingerbread keyboard) 3) Due to the volume of EVO users it seem that HTC in agreement with Sprint had decided to give us gingerbread version in two stages.

Personally, I'm loving the changes that gingerbread have brought to my phone. The browser text field is smaller than it was before... that's cute. Notifications icon are smaller. Which I would say is a lot better than before. No update is bug free. Tweet, email or call either Sprint or HTC and let them know about any bugs that you've found... That's one of the main reason why they break down the update into two stages.
