Official Signal Strength and Reception Thread

Re: this is weird...

No they aren't. I've had the radios flashed for a good 15 hours now and I get vastly improved signal in my area, as do loads of people (check the XDA thread if you don't believe). You may have differing results, but those differing results in no way mean they are "smoke and mirrors" IMHO.

For instance, in my room where I am sitting, I see a 4G indicator. Hey, there's a first time for anything!

For having 3 bars of service and a -101 dBm, I still question it.

Understandable. I can only go by what I've experienced so far today, and the very fact that I can now get 4G in my uranium den, and maintain such a signal in places like the international section of Wegmans makes me very, very satisfied with the update/patch (I think one of them actually patched). And like I said, there are several others with my experience (and undoubtedly yours).

Also, what rom are you running, or did you flash over the entire leaked 4.0.4?

I've owned the phone since day one and noticed very bad dBm (high -90s, low -100s) with 1 to 2 bars. I just think its a little ironic that I toss on 4.0.4 and suddenly my bars go up and my dBm stays the same. This was all taken from sitting on one spot in my house.

I flashed the entire leak. Waiting for the ROMs to bake before testing any.

I will say this, I had a 20 - 30 min conversation and my call was very clear and didn't lose the mic. I've experienced the mic loss with almost every call running 4.0.2.

I've experienced mic loss a few times, and ironically, haven't had a call yet today with the new radios.

Perhaps it lowers thresholds for bars? I have no idea. I just know it's better than what I had lol. I won't be able to test really well tomorrow b/c DC has fairly awesome 4G coverage, but I want to see what happens if I flash back and forth. Maybe this upcoming weekend.

Those dBm numbers are standard for 4g. Every other VZW LTE device would get those same numbers in that same location.

Re: this is weird...

The 4.0.4 is a smoke and cover for the signal issues. Even though I have 3-4 bars I have 100-102 dBm. Not very cool.

Just letting you know.

The phone has never had a signal issue.

The phone has never had a signal issue.

Didn't Verizon just issue some press release acknowledging the GN was temporarily affected, widely, on their network a few days ago. I thought I saw something floating around about that recently.

Re: this is weird...still have bad signal with repeater

I had a lot of problems with signal on Friday. I had no data connection for several hours.

What's your general area? I had no such issues, but that doesn't mean there wasn't a regional issue.

"The phone has never had a signal issue" is a very vague comment. Are you referring to Signal Bars, dBM?

So as I stated before, my house I get 3 bars of service with -101 dBm. I'm at work now under a verizon repeater with 3 bars and at -76 dBm.

Maybe 4.0.4 leak still needs some optimizing.

Re: this is weird...still have bad signal with repeater

They really need to do sonething with this phone because i am currently at work where we have an in house VZW repeater litetally 12 feet from me.

I currently have "2 bars" and showing -93dBm while my co worker on a LG Revolution has full bars and a -61dBm reading and another co worker using a HTC Incredible has 4 bars with -63dBm.

Wow and i have a "flagship" device......

Are you comparing your 4G connection to an HTC Incredible's 3G connection?

First of all, are you on 3g or 4g. You neglected to include that very important information I'm your original post.

No, it doesn't.
Yes it does and it has been acknowledged by VZW as well as Google, which has addressed the problems with the radio in both the leaked 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 updates.

I'm sorry I should have stated that we are in a 3G area only. All 3 phones mentioned are displaying 3G connection.

Thanks

Galaxy Nexus vs. My Xoom (Signal, 4G LTE, and 3G

So, I'm taking my federally mandated break at a truck stop in the Sacramento area. Sac is a 4G LTE area.

I'm not sure if something is up with the 4G in the area or what but, on my Xoom, I have done a sim pull and a full reset. When I first turned my Xoom on I had no Internet connection. So I tried pulling the sim (a poor design by Motorola in my opinion the card moves in the little holder mount thing) that didn't work so I did another factory reset (I did one last week to try and fix its sluggish performance) Well I got. 4G back. But even though it reads 4G most of the time it is not blue which means no data.

Now my GNex with the "inferior" Samsung radio has been a champ. It has been. Switching between 4G and 3G all day. For those that like bars on their phone, the Nexus has been at 2 or 3 on either band. The Xoom has had full bars.

I haven't been all that impressed with the Xoom overall. Mostly because of how Motorola has treated the early adopters of the device.

Maybe I have a bad sim on the Xoom, I will try and switch it out when I get home to see. But either way, the Xoom right now is virtually useless for me right now, but thanks to my GNex I can still do things online.

I can't help but think of the old Saturday Night Live moniker of "not ready for prime time". That is how it feels with the Android tablets.

No it doesn't. And radios are often changed in OTA updates, that doesn't prove anything.

Yes it does. Those people running the leaked radios report the better performance.

This has been acknowledged by both VZW and Google.

It is amazing how people will deny things so obviously true just to defend their purchase. Ridiculous. This is a purchase you made, it is not your mother. No need to defend it to the point of ridiculousness.

I'd be curious to read both the Google and VZW statements regarding the radio problem. So you any links to them?
