OG Droid lagging since update

I have an og droid I use wifi only. Since there is wifi everywhere I go it is a functional free phone. Trouble is it has begun to lag terribly. It takes about 10 seconds to change screens! The only apps running in background are 2 gmail accounts and one weather account.

Can these ancient droids with recent update installed still be rooted? If so is there any rom that would spped it up to being usable as a smart phone again?

i just happened to check this forum for my brother because he refuses to give up his droid... i already rooted it and installed cm7 for him (android2.3.7)... so yes, you have a new phone in your hands... pm me your email and ill hook you up with the files...
