Ok, Lets Get to the Root of the Mic Cutout Problem

Samsung admits it may be hardware. Google says it is Verizon and vodaphones responsibility. Verizon just sends a refurb. 4.0.4 is confirmed to have not fixed it unofficially. There is no official party taking full responsibility yet, and certainly no OTA's floating around with a bug fix.

OP, if you solve the mic problem, my hat will be off to you. I had it, and don't care to "hunt it down and spend monumental hours trying." Good luck with your quest P.

In my eyes it is a little to late for me to FE re interested. All the best to those that keep trying like yourself. Google, you suck.

Understandable. I have read the many posts you have written up explaining your issue, so I have a general gist of everything you did as well. Really sorry it didnt work out for you.

If you dont mind, Since you are one of the few that said you had tried different ROMs and the likes which pretty much makes you one of the only ones that has tried multiple software configurations, could u tell me any of the locations you can remember it cutting out on you? I cant remember whether or not you said you travel.

This probably isn't going to be very helpful since my problem seems a little different, but for what it is worth...

I bought a GNex on launch day. After a little over a week, I made a call and the other person could not hear me. I hung up and called back and it was fine. Around this time, the phone also got in the habit of randomly rebooting itself about once or twice a day. At other times, it would freeze for a while. A few days later, an intermittant problem started with the rear speaker not working for video files and music. It also intermittantly wouldn't have sound when plugged into my TV using a micro USB to HDMI adapter. These audio issues started as occasional and then happened more and more. A few more days and both the mic and earpiece speaker were also only working intermittantly when making calls. These problems got worse and worse until the only way I could make calls or listen to music was by using a headset. After a month of ownership, I took the phone back to the Verizon corporate store where I bought it and exchanged it for another GNex under the one year warranty. The new one has been fine so far.

No problem buddy, BTW, nice write up and questions. If I get time I will answere them all the best I can (this weekend) I was always on 3G at full bars @ home. It didn't frustrate me so much talking with family, but then when it happened to me talking with a girlfriend, it bothered me! Nice work.

Frequency of dropouts (estimation): About 3 with my 3rd GNex. And 2-3 for the first 2 GNex's I had. A piece!

I give you a lot of credit for dedicating the time into putting this up. I agree with you, when it happens it is really frustrating. And its like it only happens when it wants to. I think if a majority of the people talked on the phone a lot, they might realize it happen to them. I personaly know a lot of people that rarely talk on the phone. Including myself. It just happens to happen when I do make that call, sometimes. Its frustrating and at some points it makes me feel like selling it on Ebay and getting a different phone, like Razr or something. Only because this issue is widespread and Google or Verizon arent doing a damn thing about it.

Frequency of dropouts (estimation): Everyday now for the past three week.. I use the phone heavily throughout the day... on the road, on commutte

Temporary Fixes Problem with Soft-Reset

It's getting very frustrating now; almost happening on a daily basis; a soft-reset seems to do the trick but this is getting tiresome.. Been on the phone with Verizon three times now, and they are not "aware" of any problems, BS..! I know some of you guys are also reporting the same issues...

It got so bad last night, that I turned on the SVP - WiFi Hotspot - (not rooted) and use my old HTC Desire to Skype a call, data seems to be fine so just CDMA. My wife says that it sounds really muffled, like I'm under water, calls now Pop & Crackle on a regular basis, and call quality becomes horrible.

The phone hasn't been soft-booted for about a week, when it acted up but seemed to go away when when the Verizon tech walked me through it over the phone; call me on it and had me call out; worked fine, but now today, it's doing the same thing.

The next thing to do next would be to do a Factory-Reset; and if that doesn't do it; they would need to replace my phone. I do not want to do a Factory-Reset; it's a pain in the ass...

Ok, so we should take a poll, who has called Verizon about this issue? I know they are aware of the problem... I will keep ing maybe even try to get some credit before I have to Hard-Reset next.

I still love the phone, just want the problem to go away...

That sounds like my first GNex. You should definitely exchange. VZW is well aware of this problem.

thanks... so did you had to Hard Reset before VZ did an exchange?

I made I think 3 phone calls and on the third phone call I was transferred to tier 2 who told me to exchange. No one ever had me do a hard reset, but I did one myself anyhow. I may have told them that I had done one and maybe that is why they didn't tell me to do that, idr.

Frequency of dropouts (estimation): just once that I know of (and not on this rom, w/ this kernel, or these radios--but stock)

Is your phone encrypted?: Don't think so.

Sim Card Lock enabled?: No idea.

Have you tried a factory reset?: Well, it reset when I unlocked the bootloader and subsequently wiped everything before flashing AOKP...

Have you tried using the phone with nothing but the original apps that came with the phone installed?:
if yes, were you still getting cut-outs?: No.

Bootloader Unlocked?: Yup.
Rooted?: Yup.

Tried different ROM's?:
- Which ones?: Stock & AOKP; only occurred on stock, but my sample size is not as large on AOKP.

Thanks for typing these questions up, this is what community is all about :D.

thanks.. I'm stuck in an office for most of the day, and I'm on the road a lot, have a 3-year old; and I can't be having to reset my phone, going to the VZ store or be on the phone with them; I need the phone to perform, I need to make a living and be able to talk to the wife..

I never had this problem with any of my feature VZ phones... VZ would need to PAY me for these inconveniences...

I live right up the road from a VZW store so it was no big deal for me to go down there and exchange it. I came in and told them to check my account because tier 2 support told me to exchange and they checked my account and processed it as a warranty exchange and brought me out a new one and activated it. I came in about 8pm and the store was not busy so it went fast.

It's amazing what you can do if you call ahead. They weren't going to let me upgrade until the end of January. I called VZW, had them make a manager's notation, and boom. Upgrade away!

Thank you for answering these questions folks! Keep them coming, I'll be writing up all of this data tonight to start comparing, the more list's you post the Better!

I'm sure you already thought of this, but a spreadsheet would work wonders, and perhaps populating said data into a graph?

I haven't looked back on the questionnaires, but I'm assuredly the outlier ;).

I'm a heavy caller, I would say my average phone call is 45 minutes. I use bluetooth. Everyday on the way home from work I pass by a former dead zone where my previous phone would drop 75% of the time. With the GNex not once.
I talk and travel through 4G and my data turns off in transition but my call still holds. I do get the occasional drop but most times I think it's them. I also get the thing where I dial and nothing happens. But it's rare.

Sorry you're having trouble but I would keep calling and putting in fix tickets until the send you a new phone.

A lot of people are having this issue. I don't think a new phone will do it since I had 3 that did it.

I could understand if everyone had the problem, then saying it wouldn't help to get a new phone but since everyone of them doesn't have that problem you'll eventually get one that works. Hopefully either you guys or Google figures out the problem soon though.

Data is looking good so far, but need more people that are having this issue to chime in and answer the survey questions in the first post. I'd like to see at least 5 more people answer these questions before I post my current results.

Like I said earlier google is aware of this issue. You can go to google support forums and see that that they aware of it.

I understand that, and I did see your post earlier. The point of the thread isnt so much to bring the issue to googles attention than it is to see if theres anything the community can do while they wait for the update to qualm their problems. Since google isn't releasing information about what is causing the problem (unless you see something that i dont) I figured this would be helpful compared to just going back and forth arguing about whether a problem truly existed or not with the people experiencing it.
