Please forgive my ignorance but what exactly is the advantage to rooting my device?

I really only use it for email, text, internet and some "fun" apps.

What do I gain by rooting my device?

I guess I dont even know what rooting means or does.

Any gurus out there care to explain??

In a nut shell, Rooting your phone is a way to unlock some extra programs you couldnt normally use. Like free wireless tether, overclocker, backup programs, and other interesting tools. This forum is packed full of threads answering that exact question in detail many times. I'm not giving you the "go search" answer to be rude, but I too had this question not long ago, and after doing some research, I never had to make a post like this one.

Good luck on your search, and have fun if you decide to root it.

All rooting does is give you "root" access to system files. The most common uses are for removing "bloatware" apps, wifi hotspot, and loading custom ROMs.

So you can flash Liberty 1.5, get some real apps, over/underclock, and be amazed at what your device can really do :)

Rooting is really up to you but if all you do is phone, email, internet and text then it will not be worth it. Rooting is not for everyone. Do not root just to say your phone is rooted.

If you want to overclock your device, freeze apps or free wifi then you want to root but if not then do not bother because VZW will give you crap for a rooted phone if you need service with it.

But if you do decide to root then an app called Z4 root and it is one of the best out there.

Why root? Because you have a primal animalistic need to mark your territory and prove to the world and to yourself that you own this wonderful piece of technology and not Motorola.

And rooting it is MUCH better for the phone than peeing on it. (Just take my word for that, okay?)
