On my Moto G, why does my screen turn white then turns red?

Moto G: Bad screen, whites in screen turned red

Hello,

I've had this Motorola Moto G which has been functioning quite well for exactly a year now. Until, all of sudden, the colours of the screen went all funky and all the whites turned red. It also got slower to react to touch.
I think a drop or two of rain might have got in, could this be the cause? But more importantly, is this a common problem and is it one that can be fixed at home?
