Question Favorites tray Moto G

Using moto g play 2021. Not sure how I did this, but the middle button in my favorites tray had always been a contacts widget. Suddenly it changed to showing the last app used. Cannot remove our delete it. Turned off suggestions in home screen settings and that got rid of the new icon, but I cannot add any app or widget in that space anymore. It's like a black hole, whenever I drop an app or widget there it just disappears. So now that space is just blank. Any idea what happened or how to reset my favorites? Thank you!

Have you tried a Power Off & Restart?

Yes i have, I've also tried a soft reset (holding power button off for 10-15 seconds). No change.
