One thing you'd change about the Nexus One? (Hardware)

Loose the trackball.

Add an optical one and buttons instead of soft keys.

Wait that is a completely different phone.
A phone I DESIRE.;)

I also think the trackball isn't needed. I would like to see in its place a notification LED.

I prefer the trac ball over the trackpad. I remember on my blackberry, the trackpad was limited to 4 directions, whereas the trackball offered much more precision movement. This didn't make much difference in the OS for copy & paste, but for games, it made all the difference in the world.

Anyone know if the trackpads on the upcoming android devices are also limited?

One thing, hmm?

The radio array.

Add CDMA/EVDO/European 3G radios and make this a true World Phone.

Love the phone, but T-Mobile isn't a serious option for me.

Almost all of Europe uses 900/2100 bands. T-Mobile uses 1700/2100.

So all that is missing is AT&T USA 3g bands (850/1900).

nah.... it's fine the way it is... no need for the Nexus to be polluted by AT&T :D

i wouldn't be surprised if AT&T gets the HTC Legend...

So the Verizon version is supposed to have GSM and European 3G radios when it's introduced? I'd heard one was coming eventually but not that.

Just like the title says, for me personally, I'd ditch the trackball in favor for a trackpad or better yet, nothing. My runner up would be the screen. Now don't get me wrong, love the screen but in sunlight, like when I'm in the car, I have to go to full brightness to see it clearly. Guess you have to make certain sacrifices.

oooh, I disagree about the trackball. I have always likee trackballs and am happy to say that I now own a Hero that has one. Ever sincere BlackBerry days, I have always liked the trackball. I hope they continue to use it on phones. It looks awesome when the trackball is white.

That's the thing. No matter how clean you keep your hands that ball eventually gets dirty with a lot of use. At least I never use it so it will stay clean. Then again, I switch devices so frequently I probably would not give it time to get dirty. At the end of the day I trackpad is the way to go IMHO.

The trackpad is just so much faster and easier to use IMO..

Think 9000 to 9700 .. navigating around the 9700 was so much quicker than doing the same thing on the 9000.

It might be possible to include both the CDMA technology Verizon uses as well as GSM technology (what everybody else uses) in a single phone... Currently a few BlackBerry (ie Storm) and the Samsung Renown are combo CDMA/GSM... but few other phones include both technologies due to additional cost and complexity.

It is currently unclear if Google will add both technologies to the phone, as most other manufacturers only include one or the other. The current Nexus One is a World Phone, and will work most places in the world, including 3g coverage (except for AT&T).

Anyway... Verizon is moving away from CDMA and towards GSM... They are already rolling out LTE (GSM Standard) and hope to have some parts of the country functional by the end of this year.

First of all... LOVE this phone overall. But the screen can be a problem. I live in Florida, and even at full brightness, it was nearly impossible to see anything in full sunlight. (unless you try to cover it a bit with your hand.)

At first I didn't think I'd like the trackball, but I'm using it quite a bit. Mostly for webpages with small buttons and I don't want to zoom in just to select something.

Issues with Nexus One:
- Doesn't support AT&T 3G frequencies. If I buy an unlocked phone, I'd like it to work with more than one cell phone company.
- Touch screen buttons: wish they were physical. Too easy to accidentally hit them when typing the spacebar.
- Accuracy of the keyboard is no where near as good as iPhone. Multi-touch would help.
- Trackball is superfluous and plain silly. How many ways do you need to do the same thing. Why not add arrow keys too, and a joystick, and trackball, trackpad and touch screen.

what would i change on the N1? Well, i would change it to the Desire! it is much better looking, it lost the trackball, has hard buttons for the soft buttons that dont work properly on the N1. and for some reason, i think it has a little more memory (i am only saying this because someone has already ported the Desires ROM to the N1 and it would not fit in its entirety, strange right)

I agree with the trackball complaints, but I'd keep it in favor of either a trackpad or a more accurate trackball. It seems like the trackball is a lot less precise than the one I had on my BlackBerry Bold 9000.

My main complaint, hardware-wise, is the lack of dead area around the screen. The whole device should be just slightly larger to add more dead area surrounding the screen. It's somewhat awkward for me to use the Nexus One with one hand because the part of my palm under my thumb, or the pads of my fingers, always seems to actuate the very edge of the screen and screw up what my thumb is trying to tap. In order to use it one-handed, I pretty much have to rest it on the ends of my fingers, which is basically begging for it to slip out of my hand. It'd be nice if there was enough dead area to wrap fingers slightly without actuating the capacitive part of the screen.

I would also swap the four touch buttons on the bottom for physical buttons.

The external speaker kind'a sucks too, but it seems like the whole phone would have to be larger to accommodate something beefier (like on the aforementioned BlackBerry Bold 9000, with its channels that seem to make the sound more balanced and less tinny).

I want flash to work on the phone NOW , as for the trackball I dont understand why so many hate it ?? dont use it if you dont want to but I personally like it . especially for game use , but when not using it its not in my way so I dont understand the rage over it ?? Other than this ( and I know flash is coming ) this is by far the very best Android phone on the market . and because its a phone marketed by and sold by google , it will always get the best and all upodates before ANY OTHER PHONE PERIOD !!!!

i agree with you. but i also think it was silly to put a trackball instead of a trackpad. blackberry is moving away from them, the desire doesnt have one, they are less reliable. it just seems wierd

Nobody has responded to my trackpad question. On previous blackberries, the optical trackpad was limited to 4 directions (up, down, left and right). Thats okay for copy & paste and simple useage; however, for games (ie. emulators) that would suck!

I would rather have a trackball instead of having a trackpad limited to 4 or 8 directions. Anyone know if that is the case on the Desire?

As for the soft buttons on the bottom, another case of people blowing something way out of proportion unless there are issues with certain devices. Took me 5 minutes to find the sweet spot and have zero issues.

I disagree with that. I've had my N1 just short of 30 days now. I've had plenty of time to get used to the sweet spot on those soft buttons, and they're still problematic and way too close to the screen itself. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally hit the home button while trying to type something. My fingers aren't that fat; it shouldn't be so easy to do.

The whole screen seems to have a bias to having to hit the top 1/3 of whatever you're actually trying to hit to have it register as expected.

I would like the ability to hot swap the SIM and micro SD cards. Its a pain to remove the battery.

Agreed. Probably not popular to compare to iPhones especially, or maybe even to Treos, but the iPhone got it right with multiple items, especially the external SIM drawer. Of course, they had to do that since the back doesn't open up. Palm Treos had the SD card just pop in and out of the top as well.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

I'd like to see the speakerphone speaker on the FRONT or TOP/Bottom of the phone. It's silly to have such a small speaker oriented so that it's facing away from you while using the phone. This means you have to crank up the volume more (can you say distortion) because it's pointed away from you, or lay the phone down on its screen.

Also, if you lay the phone down on the couch or something, the speaker is now muffled by the material.

This leads me into GadgetMomma's wish:

I also kind of wish the camera didn't stick out like it does. It's not bad, it doesn't interfere with anything, it's more because I"m afraid of scratching it when I set it down, and I don't like to set my phone face down.

I have a theory here that this camera bevel/protrusion is a necessary thing to address the poor speaker placement on the back. The camera bevel actually serves as a sort of tripod leg to force the speaker a little bit above the desktop when you lay the phone down. If it wasn't there to raise the speaker above being flush, the speaker phone would be useless unless the phone was in a dock or in your hand.
