One thing you'd change about the Nexus One? (Hardware)

More built-in storage or a real Apps2SD solution from Google...right NOW.
It's pretty much the last big barrier to Android development; with more space, the quality and features of the software should (hopefully) improve quite a bit.

Eliminate the soft buttons

I would eliminate the soft buttons and add one hard button on each side of the trackball. I like having a trackball, but I'm not crazy about how accurate it is. Also, it seems like there should be more functionality when the trackball is clicked.

The soft buttons are frustrating because i will be typing away and then accidentaly hit menu or home softbutton and then have to find my way back to where I was. Grrr. I was using my wife's mytouch the other day and was actually envious of her typing experience.

As far as software goes. I am growing to enjoy the OS more and more. However, I do want some tweeks. My N1 is not rooted and i'm scared to do so cuz i dont want to ruin the warranty.

Here are some other things, maybe some of you can help with. Some of them are petty, but would be nice for me:

1. I want the HTC keyboard. Anybody know how to put that on my phone without rooting it?

2. Currently, my home screen has the google search bar at the top of the screen and then phone, messaging, browser, mail at the bottom. I dont like my main home screen cluttered. It would be awesome if I could add phone, messaging, browser and mail next to the nexus menu. So the nexus menu sits in the middle and phone and messaging on one side and broswer and mail on the other side of the menu.

3. Take a pic of my screen? No app for this?

4. Heres a small thing, that is stupid but would add to slickness factor for me. I like to have my widgets look similar. I like the dark grey look of the power bar and the news widget. I wish I could make all my widgets look llike this.

5. I would like to click the picture frame and have it take me to my gallery.

6. I would LOVE to be able to tag my APPS so that I can easily search for them. I forget the name of my apps, and cant remember the catchy name of the note taker app that I have, but if i could tag all of my note taker apps that would make it easier.

Gallery is cool. I'm liking N1 the more I play with it. Thanks all.

It might be possible to include both the CDMA technology Verizon uses as well as GSM technology (what everybody else uses) in a single phone... Currently a few BlackBerry (ie Storm) and the Samsung Renown are combo CDMA/GSM... but few other phones include both technologies due to additional cost and complexity.

It is currently unclear if Google will add both technologies to the phone, as most other manufacturers only include one or the other. The current Nexus One is a World Phone, and will work most places in the world, including 3g coverage (except for AT&T).

Anyway... Verizon is moving away from CDMA and towards GSM... They are already rolling out LTE (GSM Standard) and hope to have some parts of the country functional by the end of this year.
Yeah, LTE can't arrive fast enough for me. I almost...almost...went with the Storm 2 for that reason but in the end it was outclassed by the Droid. I like the Nexus and would switch to it if it were a true Worldphone and not just an enhanced GSM receiver. T-Mobile's footprint in the US is too small for my needs and the current Nexus lacks 3G coverage in most (all?) of Latin America if I understand correctly.

The trackball isn't a problem for me. I think it would be better for everyone if there were more internal memory to work with. I don't know that I will run out, it would just be nice to have more, since it is relatively cheap.

There's an open issue on the Google Code site requesting Google add functionality to the ball. You should consider heading over there and starring it to show support: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6333

I concur. This is one of the most frustrating things about the N1 for me. I hope that it's going to be software-addressable to fix.

Well...they did ask us to keep this a hardware discussion, but I'll risk going OT to address a couple of your concerns.

1. I want the HTC keyboard. Anybody know how to put that on my phone without rooting it?

I'm not sure you have to be rooted to do this or not, but you can try the instructions this guy has on his blog: jkontherun.com/2010/02/17/htc-sense-on-nexus-one-for-those-that-desire-it/

I'm rooted, but it was JK's instructions that I followed to get the HTC actual keyboard, and it rocks. Way better than the N1's native input.

There's also several keyboards like the HTC that are in the market that get recommended on the various forums as something to use if you want an HTC-like keyboard. A little search should turn those up.

3. Take a pic of my screen? No app for this?

You have to root to this, but there's apps out there for it. Even Apple caved in and gave screen capture as part of the OS; maybe Google will eventually.

6. I would LOVE to be able to tag my APPS so that I can easily search for them. I forget the name of my apps, and cant remember the catchy name of the note taker app that I have, but if i could tag all of my note taker apps that would make it easier.

With Google's fascination with tags (Gmail, Reader, etc), it is surprising the whole OS doesn't have tagging built into it. It's not tagging, but why not use Folders on the desktop, and put shortcuts to the apps you want in those folders. For your situation, make a folder called "notes" then add shortcuts to all those different note taker apps you don't recall the name to.

I'm liking N1 the more I play with it. Thanks all.

Aren't we all? :)

I don't have one yet but here is mu wishlist for the Verizon version

* Replace the trackball with a track pad
* Make it a true world phone by including not only the CDMA200 frequencies but ALL of the GSM frequencies wordwide and while we are at it add the ones VZW will be using for LTE ;-)

I love my N1. If I had to nitpick, I would say battery life is probably the biggest issue for me.

The ONLY viable answer from me is the screen sensors, this is a major setback from obvious competition for the games department, you need better multitouch for many games. This and the hardware keyboard have in fact switched my future buy to a Motorola Milestone to use on ATT instead of the Nexus One... though I love what Google is doing with the phone, and I hope to the man in the clouds that Google and HTC get together to make better sensors or find some way to software fix it, or else most gamers (a HUGE market) will go for iPhone instead of Android.

This worries me so... Android, let's be strong

True. Better sensors will be needed. The manufacturers need to step up on the quality of components a little more.
