Oops! - Dropped and cracked Nexus 7 Screen - SOL?

I were you I would't even think about ebaying it when you can go the square trade route.

Square trade could be a feasible idea. But wouldn't they care if the unit was broken prior to the "accident"? Of course, there's no way they could know unless you screw up and tell them, lol.
Also, if you already have an rma placed with ASUS, you probably are on both their radars, and you could be penalized (jail) for insurance attempted fraud. I'd be very careful giving anyone advice of this nature. But, by all means, correct me if I'm wrong.

Make sure you read the policy for Squaretrade. A lot of insurance companies have a clause that you have to wait 30 days before filing a claim. Prevents people from buying a policy after they broke their device. Also you chances of being audited for fraud would be higher if you file a claim right after buying a policy. I know accidents can happen right after buying a policy but just keep that in mind.

Obviously you wouldn't tell them, yeah.

They're not going to audit anyone over a 200 dollar device. And even if they did there is absolutely no way they could prove you didn't break it after buying the policy. Honestly, going the Squaretrade route has no downside at all.

Mine N7 has a cracked screen as well. Same results as others. Google says don't call me call Asus. Stayed on phone almost an hour. Got a tech that told me the costs were 160. I bought the 8GB so only paid 199. So I can fix this one for 39 dollars less than the costs to just buy a new one.:-[

Head the above posts and you'll get a new one for 40 bucks.

If you don't think it's fraud, tell them it was broken before you bought the policy. Go ahead, I dare you.

If you don't care that it's fraud, you might as well go shoplift a new one and save yourself $40. :D :D

By fraud shmaud I meant whatever, I don't care. And shoplifting involves risk. Lying about when you broke your N7 doesn't. People download music, but that doesn't mean they feel like walking into Walmart and jacking CDs. Squaretrade's business model takes into account that they will have plenty of false claims. You don't need to be such a Moral Orel.

Unless you are spokeman for ASUS, this is a really disrespectful comment:
1. Apple doesn't fix a broken ipad screen for free, but they offer half price for a replacement of the whole unit. if you ever need to ship the unit to their center, apple provide label.
2. ASUS, doesn't fix the screen for free but they don't tell you until you ship the unit to them by your own cost. then ASUS tell you the fix will cost 80% of the unit plus tax and S/H. do they think users are moron?
It's natural companies are profit driven, they try to avoid any cost. but a law is setup to balance protection of both sides. what do you think a law or rule is setup? victims of quality control problem should have their voice heard. If you buy Toyota car, you will know how this can be fatal, to users or the company.

I'm getting tired of people acting like broken screens are abnormal in the industry and exclusive ASUS. A quick Google search for "iPad screen broke by itself" will show hundreds of people who's iPads broke just by touching them and Apple won't fix it for free either. And people who are complaining about dropping their device and having it break are being ridiculous. It's an (incredibly thin) piece of glass, not titanium steel. Why don't you people own up to having made a mistake instead of blaming somebody else and expecting them to fix it for free? If you were worried about it getting broken, you should have bought a decent case or spent 20-40 bucks on a warranty. This thread reminds me of the lady who tried to sue McDonalds when she spilled hot coffee on herself. You're not entitled to anything.

What I said is, if a screen breaks spontaneously (without being dropped/touched) ASUS will replace it for free. Apple will not. Read what people actually say before commenting.

who got the free fix from ASUS? some people got it not because the fact, just because ASUS's csr don't want to be called for the same issue every day, it's a personal decision instead of company policy.

I sent an email to ASUS, as I was worried after reading about spontaneous breakage. I was informed that in such cases, ASUS policy entails a free replacement. Read the posts in this thread and you will see a couple people already got free replacements.

As i posted earlier in this thread, I got mine fixed under warranty, and I never called (or emailed) Asus about what they were gong to do even ONCE (except the initial call to initiate the RMA).

If your device broke by itself, ASUS will replace it free. They have done this for several people in this thread alone. You may note that while this has happened to literally several thousand iPads, Apple will not replace them free of charge.
Ummm ... yeah, I know. I (the poster you replied to) am one of those people that Asus has come through for.

I really don't get your constant non sequitor comparisons to the iPad. I don't care what Apple does or doesn't do, and it has no relevance to what Asus should or shouldn't do. People who didn't' get theirs replaced like I did, should take solace that a lot more people are being screwed by Apple in the same way -- is that your point?
