Opinion...GS2Skyrocket or wait...

Greetings...

I'm currently using an iphone 3g, and have been eligible for an upgrade for awhile now. I'm pretty much set on my next device being Android-powered, and I have to say, the Galaxy Nexus does look pretty nice. I guess the main appeal is the pure-ICS, and with it the promise of future upgrades/versions.

However, my current phone is slowly dying. Things like my voicemail have started working only intermittently, app load times are excruciating, and newer apps from the store aren't supported. This last thing I can understand, since the phone is pretty old.

Bottom line, I'd like to get ahold of a new phone in the next 2 months.

I live in an LTE enabled area, so have been looking at LTE-enabled phones. From reading various postings, and the latest Nexus to go through the FCC, it seems like if the Nexus does come to AT&T, there is a good chance it won't (at least at first) support LTE.

I've been playing around with the Galaxy Skyrocket in the AT&T store, and it seems to be a pretty nice phone. Slightly smaller screen with worse resolution (though miles better than my current phone), and TouchWiz gingerbread with all the AT&T junk are pretty much the reasons I'm not entirely sold. I know it most likely will get ICS in the future, but I kind of like the idea of buying a phone for what it is now, rather than what it *might* be in the future.

So i'd like some opinions. If you were in my shoes, what would you do? Go ahead with the SR, or wait it out and see what happens with the Nexus?

Thanks in advance!

I personally decided to wait and see about the Galaxy S III. I feel like it could be the mothership of all phones. Hopefully we get lots more info at CES. I passes on the Vivid and SR and since the Nexus seemingly will never get to At&t, I have high hopes for the S3. I am rocking a Pre2 and have tons patience. So if you can wait until CES, we will know a ton about the next great things and I think the Galaxy S III will be Samsung's big announcement.

S III probably won't be out until next June. And when it will be in ported by US carriers? Probably 3-4 months later. So it's like another year gone by.:p

Consider that the Nexus S first went on sale in the U.S. almost one year ago, but it arrived on AT&T at the end of July. I wouldn't want to wait that long.

I am in the EXACT same boat you're in, it's just that I have an iPhone 4S so I don't need to upgrade out of necessity like you do. However, I am personally waiting to see about the Galaxy Nexus. If the GN doesn't come out on AT&T, then I'll probably just stick to my iPhone because the GS2 is filled with all of AT&T and Samsungs' bloatware.

Samsung says March 12th, 2012 for the S3. That is why I am waiting for CES to see if their is any info about carriers and US release.

My wife has a SR, and it's a great phone, but I'd wait. If it had the HD screen I'd probably get it. It's pretty clear the OEM's and the carriers intentionally gimp these phones to a point. The SR with an HD screen would have been a huge seller for AT&T. I was shocked they came out with an incremental update so soon after the GSII.

Also consider the Nexus has the buttons on the the screen, so the 4.65" screen has a useable size of 4.3" ( as per Phil in the AC podcast) except for videos.

But it's 1280x720
Without the line of the button the res is like 1200x720 compared to 800x480 on S2, exactly 50% bigger visible area. SR battery is already suffered from the LTE radio. Add a HD screen? It will last maybe 4 hours before a charge.

Yep. it is 1280x720 and beautiful. I really wanted the phone so I bought an imported one from expansysUSA. It was pricey (~$700) but it works great on AT&T

Had the skyrocket for a week. Returned it because battery life sucked and the screen, while colorful, looks nowhere near as good as my Nexus that arrived today. I am blown away by this phone.
