Optimus Elite @ Walmart.com

For me personally, I love the thought of an Evo but I'm okay with taking "steps" to better phones, and the Triumph will certainly be a step up from my OV, and hopefully be more affordable once the new phones come out.

(edit;) also this out of stock stuff with the v :on company website and it being sold as end of life at walmart has me wondering if vm isnt pulling it due to all the modding activity. the triumph was out before the v wasnt it? and all the enticement to get an ov slider, radio update, this elite crap. maybe its their way of terminating any new owners from obtaining the ov

The very nature of android means VM cant lock the phone down. Only thing they can lock is the bootloader and things proprietary to vm's radio. Vm would be dumb to lock a device down like you are suggesting. Everybody is jumping to conclusions. The source for the new kernel was released at midnight lastnight. Give it time and people will get the stuff worked out.

The Optimus V was released long before the Triumph.

All this speculation and conspiracy theories makes me want to go buy some aluminum foil. So I can make you guys some new hats. The OV is reaching end of life as a available phone. To be sold as new. Check any of the other carriers and they eventually pull the devices after about a year. The Optimus V is going on 18 months now. That is a long time to produce and sell a phone.

Yeah that's kind of a shame. It seems as though a lot of phones on virgins site have been selling for 2+ years, I would much rather them just do what everyone else does and stop selling the crappy phones like the rumor touch and bring in new android devices every year. It's almost like they just want to keep those phones on their site to make it look like they have a bigger selection then they really do in reality since there are maybe 3 or 4 phones that people only buy from them.

just spoke with vm regarding this phone, they dont have it nor have any info on it.

This happens all the time.
Customer service is always last to know. They only know what shows on their screens, which have to be programmed and is always behind. When the Blackberry was released, we had them in our hands and they didn't have anything on them in their computers. They kept trying to activate them the traditional way because they had no clue. One was even asked if they were sure it was a Virgin Phone.

Also,
VM is not killing the OV because of modding, they are killing it because VM has a 1 year turnover on phones (typically). Also, look how far behind it is running Froyo. The cost to implement upgrading everyone to GB isn't one they care to deal with, especially when there are far better phones they can actually SELL you and make money on. They pay for it and losing money, os us paying for it and making a profit, it's not hard to see which will win out.

Few electronics are made for long as technology marches on at a high rate of speed.
As soon as they switched the screens I knew it was nearing production end, companies do this to clear out old stock/inventory of parts.

well you all will have to overlook my distrust of virgin mobile when it comes to their obsession with devices that are completely locked down when it comes to applications,games,ringtones,etc..they've always kept their devices setup to make them the only retailer you could get these items from. at a steep cost at that. consider it post traumatic vm disorder

I always got ringtones from elsewhere without any issue, it's just that most people never try it.

By not letting you use outside apps, they reduce the amount of support a person needs. Besides that, Virgin itself is a media company, why would they want you buying media from anyone else. As for the cost, talk to the RIAA, that is who you have an issue with.

Unless you work in that industry, you have no idea how corrupt it really is. When after 3 years of contract negotiations, Google throws their hands up in defeat saying you are impossible to work with, you know it's bad.

As long as you have a android phone that should never be a worry. Its just not going to happen. The openness of how android is will prevent a complete locked down. Its how android works.

I had a rumor touch before my optimus v and that thing was locked down as far as ringtones and stuff. I have never had an issue with ringtones, Apps, wallpapers, etc on my ov

rumor touch : male a folder on sdcard called APPS....in biold..not lower case. tgen download all the java aops you want to the sdcard via opera mini or direct copy via pc. also opera mini allowed ringtones on touch by letting you rename file ext from mp3 to 3g2 i believe it was. actually the touch is a decent phone

I wish I could find out who manufactured the processor in the Elite. The newer OVs have a 800 mhz Snapdragon processor which is why they are capable of so much more than Froyo out of the box. Remember the Samsung Intercept? It has/had a 800mhz processor but it was a lazy dog in comparison. The manufacturer was Qualcom maybe? The OV when it came out it ran circles around the Intercept. It would be great to know who made it before a judgement call could be made. Just like a PC. Do you buy Intel based or AMD? Life is about informed choices.

I looked for this info myself. Never could find anything more than that it was 800mhz. It's probobly a qualcom processor

As far as VM's defective phone turnover, you have to look at their product line for that reason. Until recently, VM has had THE most archaic line of phones out there. I know, I have been with VM since 2005. Most of their line are/were old, disposable, flip phones.
When you look at how much it costs to replace these phones, the though is staggering! (even if they are just out of the box) They have trouble running on the phone network as it is now.You can't mod them, you can't send them radio updates to help their antennae issues or firmware problems. They are/were true Dinosaurs. In order to stay competitive in business, you have to generate money somehow. Even though some of VM offerings have been a bit pricey, the rates are the BEST in the biz. No complaints here! Now, the cost of replacing & deposing of those old flippies has become more than Sprint/VM wants to deal with. As a result, we get a better product line. No more Dinosaur phones! VM probably lost money on those locked in app lines & promos if you think about it. Now we have a much better enviroment to find "Stuff just for us". Evolution rules : step up or die! VM will have to do the same now. Enjoy what comes next!

I'm not sure where you got your information, but it's wrong.
Newer OV's still have a 600mhz processor, the same as it has been all along. Newer ones still come with Froyo, just an updated version, OV's have never shipped with anything but Froyo. Being able to run the newer OS is due to the community, NOT anything LG or Virgin did.

As for what is in the Elite, one article I saw stated it is the exact same processor as the OV, only clocked at 800mhz, which makes sense if you know what binning is. Binning processors for the Elite (and other phones) also explains why more and more OV's are unable to overclock as well as the older ones.

my question is this: if it has practically the same thing as our current ov...what makes that piece of crap so ELITE? :what:

The marketing department had already rejected several other names due to marketing problems.
"O.O.C - Overpriced, Outdated Crap" was taken.
"I could have bought almost the same phone for 2/3rds the cost" was deemed too long.
and
"I should have bought an Optimus V" was seen as blurring product names.

In the end, being out of ideas, they had to take Jim Bob's idea of calling it the Elite. Keep in mind, Jim Bob was still using a flip phone and driving a Yugo, so this phone was a major leap into the future up for him and he was quite amazed by it.

I don't want to pass judgement but the prospect of Google Wallet almost makes it worth it too me if we didn't already have older evos confirmed
LG Optimus Elite hits Sprint, Virgin with Google Wallet | Electronista

And just how many places are supporting that feature?
You may want to verify it's even worth your time before you buy a phone just for that.

I know where I am and the places I go, Walmart is probably the only place I could use it and even that is questionable. many places that have support for it, don't even know they do.

By the way, supposedly, at least one person has already managed to get one from Walmart.

This place lets you see where you can use it locally.
Google Wallet - where it works

For me, not even Walmart.. the local BP gas station is it. I have to go 30 miles to find a store that will use it (Hoem Depot, and only one of the many around).

So why would I buy a phone for that reason?
