Optimus V Price Raised!!! Scandal!!!

You can still root and flash custom build on phones with locked bootloaders. Gingerbread was leaked for the droid x before motorola and verizon released it...

What motorola and verizon didn't want was the situation with the original droid. That phone will be updated to every android version its hardware will support, making people less likely to but a new phone for the new operating system.

The phones that are returned are likely sent back to lg and refurbished for replacements anyways...

People rooting and flashing things to their phones has nothing to do with a price increase... This phone sold like hot cakes, and it would make sense for retail stores to try and maximize their profit on a solid and popular item.

QFT.

Simple econonics: demand > supply you have two choices:

  • Increase supply (difficult).
  • Decrease demand (one easy way, raise prices).

I feel sorry for whomever bought the $138.50 one WITH $165 shipping... lulz...

I wish that ebay'd crack down on these people jacking their prices through shipping cost... and feel sorry for the people who don't pay attention when bidding on what they think is a good price w/o checking the assinine shipping charges...

ebay are changing things that the final value price will be calculated on the sale price AND shipping. Some categories already have 'maximum shipping' amounts. I know game consoles do since I just sold one. The max shipping I could charge was pretty much what it cost for me to send it via FedEx. I'm thinking that mobile phone category hasn't had that treatment yet though.

Really? Damn I musta missed that while I was installing Rubix and Liberty on my DX...

Hell even the Thunderbolt has been cracked now. It was by complete mistake but its been done. Doesnt take away from the fact carriers and manufacturers are tired of replacing phones because some n00b flashed the wrong rom and bricked the phone.

I dont doubt the truth in this. However at some point the phones stop working as well with the os. Kinda like that old 386 pc wont run windows 7. Another thing, not everybody roots there phone I know of many people that are happy using what came stock on the phone. Now if this was 100% true how come so many people have dropped there custom samsung/motorola/htc phones for the Thunderbolt? New phone with new features will always win out.

Very true they will be returned and somebody has to pay for the phone that was given to the customer. Normally its a issued credit after the phones are tested and the problem discovered. IF LG/Motorola/Samsung/HTC find it was a user error (99% of the time it is) the have the option of issuing the store a credit or tellling them phone was broke by user error therefore they have to eat the cost of replacing the phone.

There is no doubt in my mind that Rooting has nothing whatsoever to do with the price increase. If you look through these forums, you will see dozens of models of phones that are rooted and have custom roms installed on them, from every single carrier. None of these other phones suffered a price increase as a result of numerous bricks being returned.

VirginMobile has done this in the past with other phones. They have also dropped the price on some of their more popular phones after being on the market a while. I owned one of their Kyocera models several years ago that started out at $50, and ended up being available in convenience stores for as low as $15, and they were that way for over a year. VirginMobile changes prices as the supply/demand changes.

Who cares if its locked anyways....

as long as it isnt lock AND ENCRYPTED then it isnt a big deal. /coughmotorolacoughcough

The phone was on sale for 129 when I bought mine. It was that price for almost a month. They were selling like funnel cakes at the state fair in texas. True LG couldnt keep up with the demand. However, why increase the price back to the non sale price that was barely moving the phones? Why cut into your profits like that? Now what I said about the dipdongs that returned the phones after messing them up might not be 100% the reason it does have something to do with it.

Your selling a phone for 80 bucks less than the normal price, you cant keep them in stock because (1) they are a good phone and really cheap (2) dipdongs are messing them up and returning them for new ones. Now your making money off the sale priced phone, otherwise it would not be worth the hassle. But here comes johnny no-clue that tried to root his phone and bricked it because he was using a t-mobile rom that hadnt been ported to VM phones yet. He says I dunno what happened. It broke you give new phone or I get loud. The returns people say ok and do the exchange.

Its been two weeks and that store has returned the batch of replaced phones to LG for repair and credit. The tech are busy plugging hte phones into the test machines and and after about 50 phones that only needed to be flashed to stock and reset, they send a email to their boss saying these phones warranties were voided and the retailer should not get credit. Now best buy has to eat 200 dollar losses because of shipping and labor.

The vps of marketing and sales get with VM and LG and say hey we are selling these phones and people are breaking them because they are easy to root and flash roms to for the average user. But all the clueless tards are doing it also. We need to kill the sale price so we can recoup the losses hopefully. VM and LG are like ok sounds good to me. Especially VM because that means they can actually get the network stable enough to handle the traffic they now have.

GF just got the last one for 149 at local radio shack. Man I was glad, thought she was going to have to shell out the jacked up 199...

Alright this is pissing me off. I lost my phone (Intercept) on Saturday. I went shopping in Target with my family on Sunday (casually), and saw the Optimus V for $150. I thought, "oh, If my phone doesn't pop up soon, I'll probably buy that, not a bad price."

Monday: Price goes up $50. Just my luck.

I called EVERY store listed that has VM phones... All $199.99 now.

Anybody know of any deals or anything to lower the price anywhere?

You need the where's my droid app. You text your phone from any other phone a secret password, and it'll text you back it's current gps location and address.

You may also need a time machine.

The price will drop back down soon enough. Hang in there.

Yup, I found that out now. It's the very first thing I'll do to my new phone...

And to the poster above me, I've used it once, and I already love it. It's fine that it has no keyboard, because I've been using Swype for the past week on my Intercept.

Damn Tib, that sucks. I just used it on my phone and it worked.

Also check out lookout as a phone finder/backup service.
I dont worry too much about the antivirus that is with it.
But the backup and phone finder is damn awesome.

Yeah its weird... But I'm pretty sure my phone is dead anyway...
If I get the Optimus, first thing will be a tracker

I was planning to buy my father this phone for his birthday coming next month, wow 50 bucks is a day of work for me. This phones have been selling like hot pancakes and cant supply fast enough. Why not raise the price if people are willing to pay more anyway? this probably will slow the sales enough to stock and probably sale the Intercept while at it. The price will come down eventually back to its original price. Only hopes they do this before the end of april

You can use Google Maps with Google Latitude to track your phone and find it if you loose it or it's stolen. The advantage here is if your phone is turned off or the battery is dead, you can see where it was last time it was on, and have at least some reference to track it with. With the text location apps, the phone must be turned on, and have GPS turned on at that moment for it to work.

Latitude is also good for keeping track of your kids, I don't advocate spying, but if I can't contact them, it's nice to be able to log into iGoogle and see where they are.
