So this is for the rooted users who recently accepted the OTA update to 5.5.893 and found themselves without root and no working method to re-root. This was based on a basic idea of mine that was confirmed as working by OrdieSep88. The credit for pretty much everything goes to dhacker29, 0mie, and dch921 from RootzWiki for providing Releasedroot, great instructions and files, and the FULL CWR 5.5.893 file to flash, respectively. Thanks I'm sure go out to others involved who I'm forgetting. Point is I don't claim any credit, but you can pay me by clicking "Like" and "Thanks" a few times, if you wish :P

EDIT: It does sound like the 1-click method is working for some people and not for others. I would definitely recommend trying it out first, because if it works you'll save yourself from having to wipe! So go for that by all means, and use my method as a last resort if that does not work :)

Last resort option (if 1-click fails):
This process WILL wipe your phone. Also I of course take no responsibility for anything you do to your phone.
1. Use the ReleasedRoot tool to flash yourself back to 5.5.866 system. The tool is found here: R3L3As3Droot And 43V3R Root For The Bionic V2.1 - RootzWiki
There are instructions there on how to use it. I believe you want option 1, which will restore, root, and foreverroot your phone.

2. Download this file (thanks to dch921) and make sure it's on your sd-ext: EDIT 12/22 took down my dropbox link, sorry I need the space! But I checked to make sure the one right below is still working :)
Here's a backup if my dropbox goes down from overuse or anything: FULL_CWR_893_update - Minus.com

3. Download and install Bionic Bootstrap from the market. Use it to boot into CWR. In CWR, install from sd card the file you just placed there before (FULL_CWR_5.5.893_update.zip).

4. Back to main menu in CWR, reboot.

Hopefully this will work, you should find yourself on "stock" 5.5.893 with the updated radio/kernal files, and, most importantly, with ROOT.

Let me know of any problems and I'll try and be around to help.

Correct me if I'm mistaken here, but, that could also get people back on the upgrade path if they used a leaked update, yes? Just want to make sure.

If you mean an update further than 5.5.893, then I don't believe so. Your kernal / radios are upgraded and we can't downgrade them, and its very likely that future updates will not cooperate with you. Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat :)

We're a LONG way from seeing another update for this phone, IMO, and by the time its ready just be confident we'll have something figured out.

Are the kernels/radio from 5.7.893 different from the OTA 5.5.893?

Yep, thats what I'm saying.

Well isn't that a good time then! I'm going to wait until "the gods" finish an ICS rom for this thing and call it good. :) And pray that VZW/Moto smarten up and not lock the updates to a specific kernel going forward. I suspect they're going to get a "few" um, returned or "broken" phones. sigh.

SO when you say WIPE my phone, do you mean contacts and stuff like that? Paid APPS?

Really ticked I have to jump through hoops just to remove blockbuster and kindle and a few other pre installed apps.

I was rooted with Petes 1 click Root. and was ok. I moved the apps I dont want to the SD card. Couldnt do the 893 upgrade. I read that I needed some of the preinstalled apps back, so i moved them back from the SD card. Went to root explorer and I cant "write" so I cant get rid of them.

So do I follow your suggestion up top? THANKS

Yes it will wipe your contacts. If you have them all on google, they will re-sync automatically when you first log in to the phone again anyway. And all of your market apps should automatically restore themselves, when activating after entering your google info you will see some already checked boxes asking if you want to restore your apps, wifi settings, etc and keep everything synced to your phone. Keep it all checked and that should do it.

EDIT: And if your contacts aren't in your gmail account, I highly recommend logging into vzw's website, find backup assistant, export all your contacts as a .csv file, then import that into your gmail. That way they will follow you to any android phone you move to and you will never have to worry about vzw backup assistant again.

What am I doing wrong I followed the directons downloaded the updated drivers and in fastboot mode. Released root says its loading the system then fails unsupported command. Wiping data failed unknown status code. Then it says to turn on usb debugging to root phone and acts like it completed flashing. My phone is fine and all I had to do is pull the battery and hold the volume buttons and reboot.

Nevermind I'm a dumbass I had usb mode not charge only on it worked now. Well everything went ok according to released root and guess what no root.

Give it another go, now that you figured out what you did wrong before. Can't hurt. Releasedroot uses the zerg rush method of rooting and is much more effective that pete's one click tool. If it failed one time, just try again from the beginning. Post exactly what error message you get if it fails again.

To be fair, once I was on 5.7.893 and did a factory reset (don't ask) I had to use the 1-click method to get root back. Then I was able to 4ever root it again. I tried many times with the releasedroot tool (which worked before for me) and it just wouldn't root it.

Yea, that's the one I ended up having to use. It worked fine. Not sure why releasedroot didn't, though, as it worked the first time. Very strange.

I've been hearing mixed things, sounds like its working for some people and not at all for others, but I will gladly edit the OP to throw that in as a first option for people!

I haven't tried it yet but it seems to be the last resort that fixes it for a lot of folks. I dont even know where it came from. Was it the vzw droid forums? This isnt the 1 click method from the stickies here is it?

everything worked fine when I went back to the .886 I have permissions the phone was rooted. then the .893 package was installed. the
releasef root worked the only problem was when it updated .893 I lost root, forever root didn't work

What if your phone was never rooted? Does this change your instructions?

I installed the official ota on a stock Bionic before rooting. Then I tried the R3L3AS3DRoot and 43V3R Root for the BIONIC which failed. I'm also reading that other one click methods are failing after the ota. Is there a way to root my stock phone without having to wipe everything and go back to the .886 build first?

Best thing would have been to root and apply foreverroot before updating. If you've updated and have no root, then no it doesn't change my instructions. Definitely try the 1-click method first. I understand releasedroot didn't work, but the other thread I linked to in the OP has a different 1-click method that works for some. As a last resort yes you'll have to follow my instructions which will wipe.

Can you be more descriptive? You used Releasedroot to go back to stock, rooted, foreverrooted, then installed the file (Step 3 above)... at which point exactly is it going wrong and are you sure you are following the instructions exactly?
