OTA updates vs internet download link for Froyo

with all the concern about froyo coming out for the D1, DI, and DX on the same day, why doesn't verizon make a download link for the update? couldn't you download it with a PC, save it to your SD card, and install it from there? seems like that would be a good way to get everyone updated quickly and easily, without too much fuss about bandwidth. would this be possible? or wouldn't that work? thoughts?
 
Not gonna happen. They roll it out in batches. They could do that but they won't.
 
The mass download will justify VZWs " too much bandwidth being used by Droid" story and force tiered data on.
 
this actually brings up a great question for x users: when an OS update releases, AC usually grabs the .zip with the official update from google and posts it on the main page so you can install without having to wait for the OTA. however, with the bootloader locked down on the X, we arent able to boot into recovery to apply the update. so are us X owners (sadly) going to have to wait for the OTA?
