Overheating causing cracks?

A phone shouldn't get hot enough to crack it, that is an indication of a problem. That doesn't mean a phone won't get hot enough to crack a screen.

My Note 3 started heating up badly, it would spike up to 135 degrees. When I called Samsung, they wanted me to send it in immediately. When it got there, it did have a camera lens crack, which was covered by warranty. That wasn't the screen, but the phone didn't get super hot. When I talked to Samsung, they told me if it continued getting hotter and hotter, at best I would end up with a cracked screen, at worst a burned up phone.

My phone had a motherboard that went bad and was causing it to heat up. It just hadn't gotten hot enough to crack my screen. So yes it could happen, should it happen? No, that is an indication of a problem with the glass or an internal issue causing the phone to truly overheat not just running a little hot.
I've seen bottles in a fire melt before they crack. As previous poster mentioned, it typically requires going from one extreme to another for glass to crack from heat. I do agree with you that you are more likely to see other internals of the phone fail and the phone quit functioning and shut down before the extreme heat would affect the screen. However in the OP's case, it is the LCD that cracked, so the circumstances may be a bit different.

There is definitely something fishy going on with HTC M9, it is a very poorly designed phone. I took a lot of care for it not to over heat even then my phone got bent bezels and a crack only two weeks after I got it! Look at my thread with pics, "HTC one M9 build quality issues"
There is no space for movement between the front screen and the rear aluminum cover so when it heats up/cools down the expansion and contraction can cause cracks and bends.
HTC should recall all the M9's. Maybe even get sued. What a waste of time and money!

I doubt the phone got hot enough
to do that. Good try.

Don't be too quick to judge....
I have been a victim to this as well...Galaxy S7 Verizon
CPU temp was getting to >170+ degrees in a matter of minutes, battery temp upwards of 113+ degrees- mostly occurring while using camera...it would even shut down the camera with an error. now some videos I record look glitchy like the little character from Wreck it Ralph or a messed up VHS! Not to mention the CHIP of glass that melted off the corner of my display! So basically my phone is slowly melting from the inside out.. worse every day more and more permanent damage...now the chip in the display looks like there is melted film underneath!
Flagship phone is badass but trade off is it may self-destruct? What the? And I have tons of Samsung products, never had this happen before! It's like it's unstable and could blow at any moment! Almost a tease, it's like you have a time limit with the camera.

TIP: don't expect a lot from local samsung service centers, the SAMSUNG repair shop I went to the people did not know ANYTHING! The tech that was to look at the phone didn't even know about waterproof ratings and didn't even know the S7 had that feature- one example of the idiocy there. They of course ended up saying I'd have to pay for the screen if I wanted them to even open it up to look at it (they send it off for that btw) and then they just told me sorry I don't know, I guess you will need to take it to Verizon and see what they say. But I will say that Samsung corporate overall, is pretty good, just that service center made their company look BAD! I'm gonna try Verizon today, wish me luck!
And best of luck to those of you with this similar issue!

It is true.

I had a note 7. It got so hot to the touch that I had to get a shirt to take it out of my pocket only to find a crack on my screen where the phone cracked due to over heating on the front. I note that for a fact that it was due to over heating because i allways keep it in a case with a creen protector. which I did and then the screen cracked. SO its not any of the above. the screen protector is fine but the screen udner it was cracked in one area where the phone was over heating.

so now im afraid when my new one comes in that there might be the same issue. IDK im afraid to even take it in to see what they would say.
