P3Droid's Cat is out of the BAG!

Verizon has stated that soon that they were going to stop unlimited usage for the 30 they charge.. all future users will have to pay on a tierd amount..
all i can say there is dont use wireless tether.. use pda net and carry a laptop...
or better yet why doesnt someone work on all androids being "Unlocked"
just bump along on anyones tower..

If they do that they will have to issue refunds (forget the term, but selling something then termination of service when comsumers are sold said device expecting service is some sort of consumer fraud) worse case, they drop me, no ETF and interruption of my purchase and warranty would require Verizon to put me in the same financial state before my contract. Contracts can never succeed law, and rooting is legal. I don't see the worry, and frankly, I would walk into Verizon and let them look at my X running GB. I bet they have to let me walk out with it connected to service:-) sure, warranty would be void. Quit worrying fellas.

Its Bait-and-Switch, same thing SONY got away with when removing the INSTALL OTHER OS option with that one update....

Unlimited means exactly that. My phone has averaged 15GB a month of usage, so whether I tether or not, they probably would never know....

As for them letting you walk out of the store with service, exactly! Warranty on device is void, but warranty on a device and a cell signal are two different things...

I think as consumers we should stop just talking about this and start doing something about it. Frankly the cost to the carriers is far less than the cost to the customers, I understand that part of that is to compensate for the discounted price of the device but why can other carriers offer plan for a much cheaper rate? As a community I would love to see us rally together and attempt to take this control from the carriers. There have been other petitions to try and get the bootloaders unlocked, but we need to take it to the next level. I would gladly continue to pay the same amount as I do now if I could use the services, that I pay for, as I see fit.

Lets push for the carriers to publicly release information on what data really cost them. I'm not asking them to disclose trade secrets, just to be more open with us.

We can use the Freedom of Information Act to gain such information from the government, which imho helps the people keep the gov honest, then we should be able to require the same for services that we pay so much for!

Its funny that some European telecomm/isp providers have been lifting caps after years of defending this policy, yet here in the US telecomm/isp providers are doing the exact opposite. At least some companies are realizing that being a dumb tube well benefit not only the consumers but also them in the end!

This is no different than most things in life. There are many perfectly reasonable things we do in life, that a smaller percentage of people screw up for everyone else eventually. Thanks guys, from the rest of us that understood restraint and reason, and who you screwed (if this pans out).

That's just it. People pirate all.sorts of media and bandwidth. Yes, some forms are better than others, but we can all thank those abusing tether for our limited data contracts after we re sign. It is a personal choice to pay, but I am fortunate enough to afford it. So I will pay and let my conscious be free and clear. That is a personal choice and why I won't look down on people that do because google certainly didn't either and I still love Android! I am taking the high road on this one.

Anytime I'm at home, my phone is on wi-fi, meaning i'm leeching whatever little bandwidth my phone is using from comcast.... When I'm on the road, I like to bring my laptop with me, and the choice for me is tether, or go out of my way to add some sort of usb modem.... I'll be honest, I go the easy route...

We all know these forums are easier to view on a computer anyway ;)

as for the cost of plans and such, Boost Mobile offers an android phone, I think you need to get the "premium" plan, but its 60 a month. MetroPCS has an Android Unlimited plan using Verizon's 4G LTE for 60 a month... Why is the cost for that service so much cheaper than verizon?

We can thank EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU that have continued to steal their data using the wireless tether app.

You guys can all afford new phones bi-yearly but can't afford to add the $20 dollar tethering package?

I'm going to get the reply of "I pay for my data, I should use it how I want.." ..you pay for phone data, not tethering data.

We can only get mad at every person that uses the wireless tether app.

Why not trade your $20 unlimited texting for $20 tethering and use GV to text? that's what I did.

I am not spewing holyier than thou attitude because I'm root and pay for my tethering.. I'm root because I like to mod the framework file.

Still..dark days ahead for Android..

People are falling prey to the carriers whims and made up terms, I don't know how many of you had the pleasure of running truly stock android on the Nexus line of phones but WiFi tethering came baked in. Google wants to provide the best experience to customers, is it wrong to want the same from our carriers, I think not!

That "baked in" had sactioning from T-Mobile to push device/line sales.

This kind of remind me of the conversation that a co-worker and I had recently, he has Verizon and he rooted hos device and was using the Mobile Hotspot patch that allows him to use this option without paying for it and he has a habit of having 4 devices accessing it on a regular habit and was pulling major data and I told him that situations like this would cause the unlimited data packages will go away. He was pulling almost 15 to 20gigs of data monthly.

He felt that since they haven't did anything for the year that he has been doing this nothing will happen, last month he got hit with a surprise bill that I could do nothing but laugh at.... His bill was almost $500.00.

I regularly pull 8-15GB a month without using it as a hotspot... and I've never been hit with any kind of ridic charge ;)

How did they add that to his bill? What was it listed as? How did the consequent conversation he had with Verizon go?

You have an unlimited data plan for your phone and weren't using an "unauthorized service" as I'm sure they call root and wifi tethering.

But if i decided to use my phone for tethering and didnt rise above those numbers, would they ever know

most of that was pandora

The only thing that irritates me about this is that I would love to use my phone stock, but after seeing what my droid x is capable of with other roms (or even just freezing the bloatware), it would be hard for me to just deal with stock.

The leaked Gingerbread turned out to be sufficient for me, but that's the problem, it's a leak and not even official yet. I'm not the most patient in the world (and I'm sure most of you are with me on that) and I don't enjoy waiting over half my phones contract time for a software update to increase my functionality when rom developers do it 4 times as much and it's not even their full time job.

Ok iam NOT rooted. I can still sideload apps, I have a free tethering app (that I only have for when my internet goes down) that I got legally from the market place.

So what's the problem if I can still tether and still download pirated apps with out rooting my phone?

I can still brick my phone sideloading a bad app. Am I still covered because I didn't root?

Being new to Android and rooting, but having lots of industry experience I was quite surprised that the ATTs and Verizons have not blocked the ROMs and Kernals we are all so fond of. When I worked at Nokia, ATT was VERY particular about what SW they would allow on their network. Everything from the OS down to silly little java games.
Lets hope going forward there will still be room for us.

I know this will probably get me flamed but...
If you use tethering - pay for it. If we as a community want to continue to have the freedom to mod we need to fly under the radar of the carriers. Stealing data (that they can easily see by the way) is a great big bulls-eye. If they see lost revenue they will figure out a way to plug the hole. I am not defending the carriers just throwing out my 2 cents.

Tethering is NOT stealing. the carriers do not own the air waves between you and your phone. (not the 2.4ghz freq's)

You are paying for unlimited data to a phone! You just said it.between the waves and your phone.

Try to walk into a restaurant that has free refills and try to fill up a keg and let me know if you don't get the cops called on you.

So if you pay for tethering it is really just a donation?
