Pentile Screen Opinion/Topic

The problem is when you take a pic of someone's skin from a camera phone that has more grain than normal.. look at it on an RGB Stripe display and it looks "decent".. albiet with the grain..

look at it on an Pentile display and you see unnatural colors added into the mix. I'll try and get an example and post it. (I have a Droid1, DroidX, Droid3 and Atrix so I'm very familiar with the differences)

I would be very interested in seeing what you are talking about as everything I have read and seen points to pentile being almost indistinguishable from other techs on pics/video.

What do you mean a camera phone that has more grain than normal? the display has absolutely nothing to do with the camera

In MY opinion, that's completely false, I can easily see the difference. Picture is of someone's shoulder zoomed in a bit, both images are almost exactly the same angle/zoom level. Look at the blotches from the Atrix.

Left Droid X, Right Atrix.

I was sent a pic from someone via MMS.. they took the pic on a phone with a camera which had some grain to it. I looked at the pic on my DX and it looked better than on my Atrix. Look at my above pic.

So now we've gotten down to comparing pictures of pictures of pictures shown on a phone? xD

Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk

I displayed the same image from someone's phone on my DX and Atrix and used my iPhone 4 to take the pic of them both, hahaha..

Can you not see the difference? the Atrix has worse image quality on skin/shades.

different angles are going to cause different results. even if they are almost exactly the same. If you use the exact same phone and take the pictures from different angles they will look different. And the difference in pentile displays vs rgb displays when zoomed in has been shown and discussed ad nauseam and really has no bearing on real world use

Real world use? so everyone who zooms in on a picture is doing it for testing purposes?

I can zoom out completely and still see the discoloration.. it's unnatural. This isn't the only image either, almost every single image I have with skin coloring/shading shows weird shading discoloration. I've taken the same pic and displayed it on the Droid 3 and it looks exactly the same.

there's no "angle difference" in the 2 images. I displayed a zoomed in shoulder, same exact image copied to both phones right next to each other taken from an iPhone 4 almost completely flat just a few inches above the screens.

If you're defending there's nothing wrong with the image I showed than you either work for a Pentile manufacturer, or you are completely in love with a display tech that shows inferior shading levels.

I am a photographer, and an art enthusiast and Pentile displays should NEVER be used for photo manipulation. Would Steve Jobs ever use a Pentile display in his iPhones? NO, why should we?

a) I can't believe you actually went there.
b) I'm not at all surprised ck agrees with you

Would Steve Jobs ever use an open source OS in the iPhone? No. would Steve Jobs put LTE in the iPhone? No Would Steve jobs put a 4.3" screen on the iPhone? No Would Steve Jobs ever have true multi-tasking on the iPhone? No

The examples go on and on so lets not go with the "would Steve jobs" method of deciding what should be on a phone. There are reasons why people do not and never will own an iPhone

I'm going to go with "Would Chuck Norris" for my Android questions.. :D

None of your examples have anything to do with RGB Stripe vs Pentile.

FYI, ALL his operating systems are based on a free open source operating system.. FreeBSD. OSX is designed around FreeBSD/NetBSD, and iOS is designed around a very slimmed down version of OSX.

We are simply stating would Steve Jobs use an inferior product in his devices, no.. Regardless if Pentile stroke your eye's cones, or if it produces a better image in direct sunlight.. it also produces inferior aliasing and inferior shading.

Lets be honest tdizzel, Apple whether we hate them or like them would not skimp on a quality screen. They would not dare put the pentile LCD on the Iphone. It would be like putting hubcaps on a Ferrari.

You are missing the point.

Your point was that Steve Jobs wouldn't do it so why should we. My point is that there are a lot of things that Steve Jobs wouldn't do that are things that I want on my phone. So saying pentile is inferior because Steve Jobs wouldn't use it isn't a valid point.
And are you really saying iOS is open? because that kinda loses any credibility you might have had.

CK I am only responding to this to say i'm not responding to this. You come around to put down the Bionic and pentile displays and to antagonize people into arguing with you. Not to discuss, but to argue, and I'm not playing that anymore. This thread has been very civil, so I'm not going to ruin that by getting into it with you.

I would say a mobile phone should NEVER be used for photo manipulation.

I never zoom pics in like that on my phone. I have looked at images and video side by side on my OG Droid and the DX2 and saw nothing to suggest a major difference I'm image quality for me in day to day use.

Obviously you see and feel differently. That's cool. However, just because you feel the tech is inferior doesn't make it so. Different yes, inferior, not so much.

Personally, I will be quite happy to be able to see my display without having to take off my sunglasses and hide my phone from the light outdoors.

EDIT: With regards to the Apple thought stream, prior to the iPhone 4 the displays they used were nothing amazing. Average at best.

agree and I don't want to argue. Lets move on........

Absolutely. This is a topic people get very passionate about. The other thing is no one is wrong when giving their opinion on what they see. It is soooo dependent on the eye and visual system which is unique to everyone.

I do appreciate people bringing up different things they see that bother them too. Gives me more things to look at closely to make sure I don't make a purchase I will regret.

Consider this the warning. If you think I mean you, I probably do.

Nothing here in this thread has been insulting; there's no name calling, there's heated debate.

Are we no longer allowed to debate opinions?

If anyone took what I said as insulting, than I apologize. I am simply stating my known facts (to me) vs other peoples opinions.

I have given proof that discoloration occurs when zoomed in on pentile displays. I've given proof that shading irregularities happen, none of which happen on RGB Stripe.

If anyone can give me facts/proof that a Pentile display shows a visually superior picture to an RGB Stripe, I will be a believer.

Until then, I will leave this thread. I again apologize if I caused any angst or insulted anyone.
