Pentile screen?

Well, most people don't prefer SAMOLED Plus screens for the resolution. They prefer them for the unmatchable viewing angles and vibrant color contrasts.

The more I look at Samsung screens, the more cartoonish they seem to me. Colors are way over saturated and unnatural. I feel the same way about the screen on my Asus Transformer vs. the Galaxy Tab 10.1--the Transformer's screen is just about as good (IPS vs. PLS), but the colors are MUCH more natural.

Oh, my gosh. I just noticed I can see the pixels on my iPad. How tragic.

Yeah, it's my favorite thing to look at my phone from the edge rather than straight on. ;) "Viewing angles"... Only reviewers think this is important.

Seriously, I am not picking a fight between the sAMOLED and pentile and anything at all. Everyone likes different things or else we would all be carrying the same.

I just want to say with a quick fix, you can change the resolution of the Charge and make it anywhere from 190 to 240...

I've been quite happy with the screen so far, the only place i've really noticed any difference (and it was quite a difference) was while playing fruit ninja THD. That's the only compliant I have so far.

Yeah I can't disagree with you on the color saturation. But that's why I like it. The colors "pop" for me. Others find it obnoxious and annoying. Different strokes for different folks. Like I said, I think the Photon screen looks just fine, and from what I've read, it performs really well in sunlight which I think is a big plus for many.

No handset screen is perfect ... yet.

What cracks me up are those who say they see the pixels and that they're buying the GS2, a phone with much lower resolution/pixel-density. It's like driving a Hummer to a Global Warming protest. :)

Except that the SGS2 has a Super AMOLED plus screen. With the plus they got rid of pentile display. So, it gets rid of that entire problem.

What you need to do is to look at a photo or video with subtle shades of the same color. Something like fog or smoke will show it well, and you'll get muddiness (lack of detail) in shadows. This comes from an inadequate colorspace and perhaps attempts to dither to represent other shades.

They put the memory in the wrong place on this thing. They should have devoted it to video, rather than giving us extra useless storage space that is unusable for installing apps.

You just hit it on the head, sir. That is my single biggest gripe with this phone. It is terrible with shadows. It just more or less blacks them out. Not sure what I'm going to do as I turned in my Evo 4g and have no interest in the 3D. Might end up with the Nexus, but I wanted the Photon because it's a world phone and I'm going to be doing some traveling. *Sigh*

I had read all about the yucky screen problems people were anticipating, and in some cases, experiencing. Weirdly, I didn't notice this problem at all on my new Photon. I look as close as I can against various screens, and it looks pretty much the same as my evo 4g looked....only brighter. Weird weird. Maybe I need my eyes checked?!?!

Seriously, right? And I'm kind of getting tired of being told that there's something wrong with my eyes because I like the screen. Next it'll be that my reflexes are bad because my Photon is plenty fast for me and I'm not noticing any lag...

Difference of opinion doesn't equal troll. I don't give a damn about the Photon or the 3VO, I am a Samsung fanboy! Yet I played with both of them at the Sprint store and the problems with the Photon screen were very apparent to my eyes. The screen-door effect and lag were there for sure. But like it was said earlier, your mileage may vary.

I don't see any of the effects people are complaining about, and I love the phone as well. I had an Epic before this, and the Photon makes the Epic look like a jumbled mess. And the call quality--wow, it's SO much better than it ever was on the Epic.

My rooted/romed Epic is an amazing phone and my call quality is superb! hmmm.

I'd say this part hits the nail on the head:

"Those who can see a panel from 3 inches away, and who expect to see an RGB stripe pattern, may be troubled to see something different, and if this describes you, then perhaps this technology is not for you. For those others who look at phones from 12 inches away and do not go looking for the pattern visibility in fully saturated colors, please consider PenTile displays for the total performance of a phone and display. With that in mind you may find that this very much fits the bill for you."

I notice it if I look. However, through daily use I don't even notice it...it does not bother me. The comparison pics earlier in the thread is exaggerated.

My biggest issue with the display isn't me being able to see the pixels, it's the banding on gradients. Isn't this supposed to be a 24-bit color depth display? It looks like it's 16-bit with dithering.

That, and the flicker I see when scrolling light colored text or icons on dark backgrounds. The menu, for example, flickers like crazy.

I have been using my phone for 4 days now. I did not notice any issues with the display as I tested it during the 1st few hours I used phone.
Upon reading the reviews (this thread mainly) I started to look for the issues everyone has been talking about and sure enough I can see most them.
However, over the last two days, I have gotten to the point that I do not notice them. I am usually looking at the screen from about 10-18 inches. I have looked at video, text, graphics. The display is fast and the colors seem to be pretty close to true.
For me this is a non-issue at this point.

Ok, another evo 3d owner here. I spent some quality time with the photon today and I got to tell you that its a very nice phone. The pentile screen door effect is not as bad as people are making it out to be. I mean, I have perfect vision and really and truly you would have to focus on it to even notice it and when I did notice it, I was like "Oh its not that bad at all". Not to mention how the colors pop makes up for it as well. Honestly the average person who sees this phone will never no the difference unless someone tells them what to look for. The only thing is that I simply don't like motoblur but changing the UI is not a problem so no big deal there. Now with all that being said, I am gonna add another line to my account and will end up purchasing the photon anyway since the gsm option is something I greatly need. I will do that as soon as there are some hacked radios so I can use my tmobile prepaid sim in it.

I have to be honest with you, my unrooted Photon beats the crap out of my unrooted Epic (and I don't root phones, simply because I use them for work and can't experiment as I do with other gadgets). I mean, it's night and day in terms of what works perfectly on the Photon (GPS, Bluetooth, phone call quality and reliability) and what doesn't on the Epic (GPS, Bluetooth, phone call quality and reliability). In fact, it's so much better than I don't think I'll care what killer specs the SGSII has, I won't go with another Samsung phone for while.

Well, after a couple days of using the phone, I can say I don't see any of the issues some other people are reporting concerning the screen. It looks good to me, and I can even make it out in direct sunlight which is a bonus. This phone is a significant improvement over the EVO 4G IMHO...

I really couldnt take this screen any longer I returned the phone today.I really wanted to love the phone and dont get me wrong its a great phone besides the screen but its back to the evo until a better phone comes out.
