Phone Auto Scrolling to the Right

Just my opinion... I really, really, really think this is something that has to be repaired with an HTC software patch.

I would consider the EVO - even though I hated Sprint when I had them - but honestly, the EVO might have this same exact problem. Same manufacturer. Same OS. Probably the same hardware?!?

Status of my replacement, in case anyone is getting ready to go through this:

1. Today, I received an email from VZW telling me how to activate my "Certified Like-New Replacement Device" even though I insisted on a "new" Inc. LOL
2. I called VZW. A very helpful rep researched the issue, even talked to the local VZW store to get a clear picture of the situation and, in the end, told me that the phone is going to be new. (We'll see on Thursday.)

If it's a refurb, I'm shipping it back to VZW.

The VZW rep suggested that I return the original Inc, too, and use my previous phone (BlackBerry) until new Incs drop in June (or, of course, just wait for some other new phone).

Regrettably, I'm considering sending my Inc back since this phone is basically unusable whenever the screen and the cursor freaks out.

I take back my comment about the EVO likely having the same problem. I just noticed that the EVO doesn't even have the optical joystick. Based on the flashlight-over-the-joystick test that made the screens flip, we know the optical joystick is the problem.

EVO + no joystick = no problem!

just popping in after seeing the thread get bumped to the top to say that since that first episode, the problem has NOT returned. that's with some damn heavy use too. at this point i'll chalk it up to some random glitch

Well...

Just got back from Best Buy a little while ago after returning my Incredible. Loved it while I had it, but hate it when things go wrong. For the record, my screen scrolled to the right even when in a closed drawer in absolute darkness. Light on the optical joystick had nothing to do with it.

I should mention too that the other big reason for returning the phone was that in the building where I work, (it's a huge building) there is no Verizon coverage. A couple of years ago, the building managers set up some sort of device that beams Sprint throughout the building and my old Treo worked perfectly in there. I was thinking that since Sprint worked, Verizon would also work in there.

No such luck. So going back to Sprint with 4G is a no-brainer now for me.

Anyway, I took that old Treo back to Sprint and reactivated it and now am patiently waiting for June 4 and the Evo to show up.

Light (bright as compared to the surrounding room causes this issue, I have done multiple tests on my Inc. and I can replicate the issue consistantly. Dont know of a fix, I just make sure not to set directly under a lamp or light now.

Not in all cases.

As I mentioned above, my Incredible was in a closed drawer in total darkness and the screen scrolled itself to the right just like it did in the open.

Although, for this to happen in a dark drawer, your phone was on -- meaning that the screen was emitting light, correct? That light may have been picked up by the joystick and caused the flipping screen.

Good point.

Reflected light from the screen onto the optical joystick. Guess I shudda covered up the screen. I was thinking more along the lines of the overhead lights shining down directly onto the device.

I'm thinking long and hard about moving to the EVO on Sprint. At least your EVO doesn't have the optical joystick; therefore, you shouldn't have this problem sending your device into a spastic, unusable state.

I wouldn't say it was unusable...more of an embarrassing annoyance.

My buddy has the iphone and I'd hate to have my phone going spastic on me while he's watching. That's all I'd need to hear from him...

Who knows. I'm sure the Evo will have its share of little problems as do all new phones. At least I'll have coverage where I work and hopefully the home screen will stay where I leave it.

Cool. I was referring to the cursor that jumps around as I try to tap out an email or update a spreadsheet. That definitely makes the phone less useful, to me.

Well, even though I've had only 1 day with my new replacement Inc, I feel comfortable posting this comment. I figured sooner is better since some of you, like me, have 30-day return windows ending.

I loaded every single app that I had on my previous Inc. Then, I put my new Inc in every possible scenario that made my original Inc freak out -- flipping home screens and jumping cursors. So far, I have not seen the problem occur. The only time I made the screen flip was when I swiped the optical joystick with a maglite flashlight, but I don't consider that a flaw. The flashlight counts as input.

There definitely is a batch of Incs out there that have this ridiculous defect. As far as I'm concerned, every one of us deserves to have an Inc that is free of randomly flipping home screens and erratic cursor jumps.

Obviously, there is no guarantee that your replacement will be flawless. If this problem bothers you enough, as it did me, it's worth it to demand a new "NEW" NEW!!! replacement Inc.

I'll post again if I suddenly find that the flipping occurs again. I don't think it will, though.

I have had the problem of screens chaning on their own also - home screens, clock screens and others. I've narrowed this issue down to the optical trackball. In certain lighting conditions, the screens change. If you hold your thumb over the trackball - it stops. I'm guessing it's a design thing; hopefully corrected with software. I've requested a new phone.

Temporary Fix for screen flipping

OK, somewhat Rube Goldberg but I found that if you take a piece of Scotch tape (opaque), punch out a circle with a hole punch and place it over the optical track ball the phone will not change screens due to the abient light. Yea, I know this is weird, I did it just to prove the point that it's the trackball that's the culprit. I'm sure a fix is in the works. However, until then my little circle of tape does not inhibit any of the trackballs operations and the screens don't flip

I was near a fairly large window so from what I'm reading that may have been the issue. Screen definitely went nuts though.. started highlighting my Handcent SMS widget and flipping back and forth. I'm hoping this doesn't continue as it does make the device hard to use. I also hope this can be fixed with a software patch/update so I don't have to get a replacement.

I feel like I'm on CRACKBERRY again reading about the storm screen click issues.....please incredible don't let me down.

My Handcent started to become highlighted too but since I cleaned off my joystick, it seems to have stopped.
