Phone continiously resumes playing music from the Spotify app after being paused

Lately I've noticed that when pausing music on the Spotify app, after some time it will start playing by itself again, and keeps turning back on no matter how many times I press pause until I force stop the app. I was suspecting it might've had something to do with the Google assistant as I've used it frequently to play off music, but turning it off made no difference. What could be the cause of this?
