Phone Dialing "+1" before some numbers

I also had the problem on my Samsung S7...but it was only for numbers of people who subscribe to "WhatsApp". (It appears as a listing on the contact detail page under the "View More".) I uninstalled my "WhatsApp" app and the +1 dialing listing was GONE. Re-installed WhatsApp and the +1 calling did NOT reappear. Hope this helps.

Sorry about the WhatsApp solution, it was wrong. While it did eliminate the +1 from the contact listing, it still added it back when dialing. Solution from T Mobile tech for my Verizon Samsung S7 phone:
Tap Phone Icon
Menu (three dots, upper right corner)
Settings
Scroll down and tap on "More Settings"
Scroll down to "Assisted Settings"
Tap and next to "Manual", turn it off (swipe to the left)

Fixed on sprint note 9.

I kept getting my phone to add 011 to all outgoing call regardless of where the contact was saved or how it was saved.

Problem fixed.

1. Go to your phone screen where you dial the number.).
2. Hit 3 dots on top right of screen
3. Go to settings
4. Go to more settings.
5. Go to us dialing
6. Turn it on!

Problem solved!

All of my contacts, replay to callers and app dialing is working great.

Hope it helps.

Not sure if this help but looked to see if the smart dial was checked and when i unchecked it took the 1 off

Solution
This problem also happened when I bought Samsung s8 plus. I did factory reset initially thinking it will stop but it didn't. The only best solution I got was after I updated the phone's software version. The system update solved the problem.
Make sure you manually update the version of the phone, after that, rescan to check for another update. The new update will specifically notify you for an improvements to your Samsung galaxy s8+.
Steps
Accept it and download. After the update,
go to call setting from the calls log > other call settings > assisted dialing, uncheck the manual setting or edit to your country information.
You can also go straight to assisted dialing, 'search from settings' check or uncheck the manual tap.

Note that, when your system is not updated the assisted dialing will be automatically checked and hidden.

So I have been having a reoccurring problem with trying to dial some phone numbers lately that has been very frustrating. Some of the numbers I try to dial, the phone is adding a "+1" in front of the number so the phone can't dial it.. it just sits there saying "dialing" , but it never does. It has been happening with 3 different type of contacts: 1) Certain contacts in my contact list that are "linked" to their facebook contact. 2) When I use the Google Voice Search Dialer to call a business for example... it automatically enters "+1" in front of the phone number 3) Some phone numbers that show up on web pages that I select to dial, the phone again adds "+1" in front of the number.

To elaborate on what I have tried so far... I have reset my phone 3 times (per Verizon's recommendation) and I even have a brand new phone that they also tried that is less than a week old. Same problem every time. At first I only noticed this happening to contacts in my contact list. When you look at the contact card details, the phone # has the "+1" in front of it. However, when you go to try and edit the #, the "+1" is no longer there.... every time. I even tried to delete the number and re-enter it.. no change. I then un-linked the contact with facebook and then the problem goes away. So I figured the problem was with facebook. So I asked a friend of mine to log into his facebook profile & see if he had a "1" in front of his phone number, thinking that was the problem. It wasn't, and there was no "1". He also verified he didn't accidentally pick the wrong country for his profile. So back to square one. But remember, only approx. 5 of the 30 contacts that I have linked to facebook have this problem.

I took the (brand new) phone into Verizon store again today & they told me the problem was the AVG virus scan app I (recently) installed and I had to reset the phone again. I assured them that wasn't the problem because I had just, for the first time, installed that app after I got this new phone, thinking maybe I was getting a virus or something so I was trying to prevent it. The problems started way before that. So I just reset the phone AGAIN today and sure enough, the problem is back. HOWEVER, not all the same contacts have the problem as the ones that did before. Some are the same, some aren't.

WTF!?!??! Anyone have any clue? Verizon checked to make sure assisted dialing is turned off & the correct country code is selected in my phone. I don't know what else to do and I'm frustrated that Verizon can't figure it out.
THIS IS A GOOGLE ISSUE. I accessed a phone number via BING and guess what...NO +1 in front of any phone calls when I tapped the phone number from a Bing search.

I REPEAT...THIS IS A GOOGLE GLITCH and it is happening still, more than a decade after your post on this forum!! For me, it only started about 4 months ago.

Did not work for me. I went to settings, turned off assist, turned off all the country codes, turned on US dialing, restarted the phone even, to no avail...BUT...I tapped a phone number from a BING search (was experimenting to see if this was perhaps a google search problem) and guess what?? NO +1 in front of any phone number I tapped from a Bing search!

This is clearly a GOOGLE GLITCH. So, by extension, an android glitch, since they're all interconnected.

If it has to do with phone updates...why does this +1 only happen to me when I tap a number from a GOOGLE SEARCH, and NOT when I tap a number from a BING search??

Seems to me that tells that it is purely a google search problem...not the phone update.

Welcome to Android Central, @patiencepainter ! I don't have any issues when tapping a phone number link from a Google search result in Chrome on my Pixel 7 Pro. Which phone do you have, what Android version is it on, and which Google Play system update is it on? Also, which version of the Chrome browser app is it using?

It's an international version of a domestic phone number, in us from outside the us

It's happening on 3 phones: Samsung S23, Samsung A14, and even on my old Samsung S9 that I keep around as a backup phone (fully updated of course). All are running current updates/versions of Android and Play Services. The phone app on all three is the default app that came with the phones...which never gave me a problem until recently.

Not a huge deal except it started happening with the most recent updates, and since then I get a popup telling me I'll be charged for an international call if I proceed, even though I'm in the US dialing a US number. Highly annoying. I just ignore the popup, and the call will go through, but that stupid extra step when making a call is ridiculous.

Interestingly, it does NOT happen when I tap a phone number from a Bing or Duck Duck Go search. So it's something glitching in google or a google component interfacing with Android. And it doesn't matter if I use Chrome or Firefox...always happens with google search only.

Just another case for not updating, some would say...? I don't expect it to ever get fixed since I've been the route of having android/google troubleshoot other problems in the past, only to just give up because it's so time-consuming and the issues remained a mystery. Anyway...appreciate the response though.

Hmm, it's hard for me to test since my Samsung phone is a backup, so I don't have a SIM in it. Let me see if @mustang7757 or @Laura Knotek can test this on their Samsung phones and reproduce the issue.
