phone has only one outstanding feature, it's fast and smooth.

I guess that's two outstanding features.

We all know that this phone missed the mark in several areas such as wireless charging and a whole bunch of features standard on the Motos and Droid. The only thing I really see this phone excelling at other than the camera is its speed and smoothness.

That's my two cents, coming from a non-techie person

You can't degrade it for not having the features of Moto's and droids. That's like saying "I love Touchwiz, and it doesn't have all the features of Touchwiz so it misses the mark". If you like the features on Moto then buy a Moto.

Every time I hear someone say 'the Pixels only stand out in one way' I think of this scene.

Don't get me wrong, I would buy it again. But it's not like they invented a better mousetrap

I enjoy assistant a lot as well. Getting it more and more into my daily routine and I like how I can ask about things and continue it like a conversation (such traffic to somewhere then how long they are open and whatnot) :).

Maybe because the marketing makes it sound like this is something new and wonderful, when I think anybody would be hard-pressed not to admit that it's just slightly incrementally better than the last best thing

Having owned dozens on flagship Android devices in the past years, I can tell you with 100% confidence that ALL android phones start out smooth.... apps and daily usage quickly change that in as little as a few weeks.

The hands-off file system of iOS is what keeps iPhones running so well. The fragmented, every-man-for-himself file structure of Android is its downfall - as well as its biggest perk.

Until that changes, the fate of all android devices will be the same. When the processors get faster, it will just take a bit longer before they inevitably slow down.

The only thing that the new droids have that the pixel doesn't would probably be the mods. And if you don't use those (which I don't) then, feature set is pretty even.

Um, how about Active notifications, twist for camera, chop for flash light wireless charging. That's at least 4 not so small things to have. I won't rehash it here, but almost everybody has commented on the lack of active notifications and wireless charging

Isn't that most Android phones .. or well even iPhones? Are you able to name a phone that has come out and made a huge jump forward?

Yes and no, it's phone dependent. Had my Honor 8 since launch and 2 updates later, it's still snappy. I think it's also down to phone usage too.

I'm non techy too but wouldn't software updates actually help keep it running smooth and fast? If this is the case, the Pixel will get direct updates. Also, I too had an honor 8 and they seem to care about keeping the phone optimally running. Btw, I kind of Miss the honor 8 because it had some features I really liked. Trying to find a reason to keep a phone that is double it's price. 😬

No I can't, and that's part of my point. It just seems that people out there are making it sound like this is the first thing that's ever been able to slice bread

How so? I disagree. I see people really enjoying their phones. Not just this phone but others like the V20 as well. Also how do you know the ones that are so happy aren't coming from something like a Note 3 or Note 4 (something of that age) so taking a jump that big would be a huge "OMG" moment whereas to people like me it may not since I upgrade way too often. Remember your situation isn't everyone's so downplaying them isn't really needed ;).

Wholeheartedly agree. I'm keeping my galaxy S7 EDGE. Much better than the pixel. Even the AI, what a disappointment. The pixel isn't doing anything that can't be done with Google on my S7. And pics on my galaxy S7 EDGE are better than the pixel especially the videos. Very shakey on the pixel. Oh well, come on S8

This is where I'm curious to see how Google's smart storage and free up space features fair. Usually it's the fragments of left over apps I've installed and deleted or full storage that has slowed me down. This is supposed to keep that clean so we'll see how that affects the speed over time

You hit the nail on the head. They copied iPhone marketing(as well as other things), and built up false hype.

I think the marketing is leaning towards the first Pixel made by Google. They technically have never been involved in the hardware this much, so they are marketing that aspect and the public is taking it their own way.
