Phone is 2.1, want to upgrade to 2.2 Help

I've stuck with 2.1 for a while and I'm trying to upgrade to 2.2 Froyo

Through Settings --> System Update, I tried to update today. My phone downloaded update 3.26.651.6 but my phone reboots then just sits at a screen with an exclamation point ! surrounded by a triangle next to the android robot symbol.

Does it take hours to install? Am I doing the right thing?

What phone are you using? There are some phone specific threads that may be a able to give you an answer. Normally, there is no way that it takes that long.
