Phone reset itself completely

So I go to use my phone a short while ago, when it rebooted as I was using it, and then stuck on a weird boot screen - a circle with a picture of the phone and a down arrow in the middle. It hung on this screen for a good 3 minutes or so, then rebooted a couple times, went to the red Verizon screen, and then launched the initial setup wizard.

My phone literally reset itself to factory defaults. I lost all my settings which I've customized over the last couple weeks.

What a POS. I'm so pissed off right now.
I have to say I've never heard of an Android phone hard resetting itself. But for anyone to pay to see the location and name of the person that's calling is a bit much. Now , when it comes to not having everything backed up. That is on the user from my point of view. If you would have done so from the start. You would be ok with it because it would be right back the way you had it. I've had iPhones in the past and would think of going back with how good Android runs now. Plus it just hasn't been the same with Steve (Smartphone GOD) gone.

You're not alone, friend.

My HTC One did the same thing to me:

Exact same thing that you described.

Never had an Android phone do this to me before.

Yea, this isn't good. I read your thread, this is the same issue. I wonder if it's some sort of bug. I was starting a text in Hangouts when it happened. No warning.

FYI, you can have DropBox sync your photos and videos using the camera upload feature. I think Google Drive can do so as well.

With the iPhone all settings were uploaded and stored in iCloud. I never had to think about it, and when switching phones it made life easy. Google could do the same thing using Google Drive. That way you don't have to worry about a third party app taking care of everything. If I move phones then I could sign in to my Google account and have it pull down all my apps and settings again. I don't see that as asking too much.

Totally agree. That's one of the things that makes it so easy when you upgrade to the next iPhone. Even replacing a broken iPhone is seamless because it restores everything. It's like it's the same phone.

I don't think Google will ever have this feature native to Android, and it will have to be someone like Samsung or HTC to burn that into Sense or TouchWiz. Of course that does no good if you switch form one to the other, but it would be a start.

Also, just wanted to say sorry for throwing a mini-tantrum on my thread. I am really trying to make Android work for me as I truly like the phone and I'm finding so many advantages over iOS and things that it does much better.

My last couple weeks have been stressful and this pushed me over the edge.

No worries here, it's understandable...I would have been upset as well. Did you get a replacement phone or just re-do the one you had and is everything working properly now?

After it reset itself, I did another manual reset, then set everything up. Everything seems to be working properly again; I don't want to get a replacement unless absolutely necessary because I have a tempered glass screen protector on this one I just paid close to $50 for after tax. It's already scratched and I guess I could get a replacement from Zagg but it looks like that's another $15 plus shipping. If it happens again, I'll have to bite the bullet and get it replaced.

My wife's Galaxy Note II did the same thing. We were sitting at dinner and she pulled it out of her purse and it was sitting on the setup screen from sprint. She lost everything on her phone.

Instead of ripping on people with phone issues, perhaps the brilliant minded folks could help solve problems for people who lose important information because of bad software or hardware.

I scanned this thread because my phone too just reset. Also frustrating is how everyone gives their opinion about this and that and what to do, but nobody really answers the question.
Does anyone know why a phone would do that other than"bad phone"?

My wife's note 4 reset itself 3 times already. No warning, random. For some reason after every reset it made, it wants to re-download every app we downloaded from play store since the beginning of time (from both google accounts). I went in, and had to delete app history so it would stop doing that. There were hundreds of apps that it would start to download simultaneously from app history. My note 3 randomly crashes and restarts itself, but that's a different problem. I'm just so pissed that these ridiculously expensive top of the line phones don't work properly. My friends have the cheapest android phones that work with no problems and don't have any issues.

Yep...my new Droid Maxx did the exact same thing. I'd had it maybe 3 weeks, and it just erased itself and went to the setup wizard. I called Verizon and they thought it was an app, but this seems unlikely. My last app addition was a week ago, and I didn't have much on the phone...I wonder if it was an upgrade? It seems to upgrade itself an awful lot without asking my opinion about it. We'll see if it happens again...

My Note 4 reset itself 2X - i think when it is on in my pocket because the power button is inadvertently hit it randomly resets every once in a while. So far it has happened 2X in 6 months. I am trying to avoid having it turned on in my pocket by locking the screen before I put it away. But I am only guessing here. And there is no good backup solution (like Apple has). I had most data backed up in the cloud but setting the phone up again took a whole day. I think if it happens again I will go back to Apple it is just too painful to risk starting over again. :'(

Interesting...mine was just lying there, not in my pocket at all, and I'd locked the screen before putting it down. I wonder if it's the same thing, or two separate bugs?

There is a way to recover what you have lost....if you have not used the phone since the reset. Download the app "Dr. Fone" (by Wondershare) on your computer. The app/website should give you 6 steps to recover your phone's data. However, if you have used your phone, there will be new data coming in, meaning that you've overwritten what you're trying to get back. I really hope this helps....this just happened to me and I lost all my clients' contacts and family photos.

My HTC Desire does the same thing, multiple times in a row and it happens randomly. I've tried factory resets and so did the guys at Cricket, but it is still doing it.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME--!!!!!! --- I LOST EVERYTHING--- PICTURES--CONTACTS--APPS--EVERYTHING!!

I have the galaxy note 4 and everything is gone. I noticed the phone shutting off -- and then it said reset-- when i tried to turn the phone off and stop the reset--i couldn't turn it off. Now everything is gone. So frustrating!

My phone (HTC One M8) just completely reformatted and reinstalled yesterday. Spontaneously, as far as I can tell. I didn't see any prompts, however I was rebooting it on purpose at the time. I had set encryption on the HD a week or so ago, and now it's not encrypted.

Had to re-set up the whole phone.

Any viruses or malware that does this out there?

My HTC M8 just did this last night. Shut off automatically right before bed. I assumed the battery must've died or something so I hooked it on the charger and went to bed. I woke up and turned it on. It was an unusually long load and then I got prompted with the Setup Wizard. Before even starting the wizard, I am prompted with a million messages saying "Unfortunately, XXX has stopped." -- Click Ok and keep getting these messages. I'm going to try to make it through the Setup Wizard and attempt a factory reset. I know I'll probably loose a ton of stuff but I'm okay with it for now.
