Phone turned off due to heat

Not sure if this is an Android O thing (I aam running the Android O beta) or a hardware issue with my Pixel XL...

I was using Google Maps to get myself to the airport the other day. Phone was plugged into the same charger (USB-C) that I have been using for a year now and sitting on the passenger seat. Admittedly, the phone was face-up with the display off but probably getting direct sunlight. Anyway, at some point I was aware that voice didn't prompt me for an upcoming exit - I reached for the phone and hit the power button to wake it up and I could tell immediately that the phone had shut down.

Once it rebooted, it displayed a notification "Your phone powered off due to heat" or something like that. It was, in fact, quite hot. I guessed that the problem was a) a charger issue or b) direct sunlight.

So, all of that was last Friday.

Today (Wednesday), the phone is on my desk at work with the Google 22.5 watt charger (this one: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../store.google.com/us/?hl=en-US&token=K9KDE_xD) plugged in. At some point I picked it up and turned it on using the fingerprint sensor and noticed a funky notification up in the bar which turned out to be another "Your phone powered off due to heat". I don't know how long it was off - not very long I think - and this time I did not have to reboot it. It did not feel even the slightest bit warm.

So, I don't know what is going on here. Android O? Phone hardware? I just don't know.

That's an intended feature in the first scenario. I've had it go off a couple of times on my Pixels as well. You're obviously experienced with devices and whatnot, so I'm saying this for others' benefit: Charging and using maps should ideally be done at separate times. The sunlight doesn't help that.

As for the second reboot, that one makes less sense to me, other than obviously fast charging generates more heat than lower wattage. The 22.5W charger you linked maxes out at 15W per side, which is less than the 18W supported by the Pixel XL, yet still more than enough to qualify as fast charging. Was the XL under anything or in a confined space at all on Wednesday?

Thanks for your thoughts.

To be honest, I am not sure the phone actually rebooted during the second incident. Certainly, the first time, I had to force the phone to power up by holding the power button and initiating a boot. This second time (today) I simply did what I always do - I used my index finger to unlock/wake the phone and then noticed the notification up in the bar at the top of the screen; dragging down the bar showed the full message.

I am wondering if the second notification (that is, today's) was simply a re-hash left over from Friday's - perhaps a bug in Android O's notification system. The phone is acting quite normal and there is nothing out of the ordinary visible in battery stats.

I will for sure keep an eye on it though and carry a spare phone with me on an upcoming 7-14 day trip to Brasil, just in case...

In fact, I am sure it did not reboot today - if it had done so, I would have had to enter my pin code, as that is the way my security settings are configured.
