Location doesn't matter .

I still remember a few years ago people thought that it was location that determined the time an update arrived. People used to give their locations just to see if a certain area if the world received an update. Those were the simpler days lol.

Wasn't there some side effects for a few that sideloaded in November ?

Don't think unless someone screwed up. It shouldn't be any different than the OTA other than in the case of side load we are just manually updating the OTA file.

these rollouts are stupid. Why can't it just be like the iphone where everyone has access to the update?

I know from talking with a Verizon CSR after they got the iPhone, that's not always a good thing. Their support department was backed up with iPhone users having all sorts of problems. Apple didn't allow testing by Verizon, and they pushed the update to all users at once, so the issues present in the update nailed everyone at once. With a stated rollout, serious issues can be caught before it gets to too many users, keeping the negative PR to a minimum and ensuring most of their users are still in good shape while the issues are fixed.

to me it conveys a major lack of confidence in their code. It's also super annoying i can't stand it.

First, there's no update that goes out that doesn't have bugs present. Some are minor, some are major. It's less about confidence in the coding and more about being realistic. The bugs are going to be present, do you want to gamble that there won't be major bugs, and if so, take the chance that it will affect their entire userbase? Look at Apple during their iOS 11 rollout, bug after bug. By pushing it to everyone, it means they have to rush to fix it, which leads to more bugs in the fix. The more you rush, the more chances you're going to compound the problem.

The reality is, most people scream and rail against how Google does their updates, then the update comes, they check it out for an hour, and don't think about it again. Better to be cautious rather than push it out, hope for the best, and risk their customers screaming that some major app's functionality is broken or their device is unusable. While I like quick updates, I'd rather they take their time and limit as many issues as they can rather than have it now and deal with the usability after pushing a faulty update.

You'd think they're pushing it to such a small number of devices, there would be no need for a staggered roll out.

Like I said in my other posts, it's more about trying to ensure whatever bugs are present make it to as few users as possible. Say they only have a million Pixel 2s sold. If the big was serious enough and made it to all users, that's still a million angry customers screaming for a fix.

With that said ^^^ the few that sideloaded how is it bugs? Improvements like BT ?
I still believe until it shows on this list OTA is not available

Got my update along with 8.1.0 for the Pixel 2.
Very happy with it. I used the Beta on my Pixel XL earlier in the month.

OTA is rolling out. I'm on T-Mobile and just checked for an update

It was available on my Pixel 2 XL, but nothing when I check on my Pixel 2.

OTA.
But I cleared cache and memory on Google Services Framework first and restarted the phone. Then I went to system update and asked it to check for an update and it showed up.

Before doing that, nothing. Kept getting the message that the phone was on the latest version with September security patch.

I would think that anyone mashing the CHECK FOR UPDATE would pretty well know what the risk is in getting the update ASAP.

That's why GOOGLE should give it to them when you ask for it.... I know the danger and I accept that when I request it...

Yeah.... I waited over 3 weeks for the November and then chose the "clear framework data"method and then I got it moments after...

But, I don't suggest anyone do that.... It killed a number of notifications and the phone went a tad wonky... Bad enough that I had to reset it and it is still not 100% as it was before...

So, await I shall this time or sideload it.... Then maybe a complete reset after just to get it right...

I got this update today as soon as they released it. It took a few weeks for me to get the November update. So no correlation for me.

My lack of patience knows no bounds. I un-enrolled from the beta, installed 8.0, then side loaded 8.1, factory reset the phone, then restored from today's backup.

Mostly Tapatalk notifications are wonky. Rest of the stuff seems to be okay.
