Pixel 2 NFC Ticking Sound

That's why I had them send an advanced replacement. This way I can compare both side by side. If they both have issues, they're both going back since I'm still within the return window for my original Pixel 2.

I suspect most devices have this issue and people just don't know it since you need the screen on and have to listen for it. I probably wouldn't have known if I hadn't read about it. In any event, I have 14 more days to return and hoping Google addresses this before then.

Mine doesn't click at all. Is it a constant noise?

Edit: Well now I'm not sure if I'm hearing it or I'm hallucinating. Lol. I guess I don't really care as long as it doesn't mean there's a bigger problem. I rarely hold my phone up to my ear anyway.

Edit 2: Husband says he hears it but it is super faint. Sounds more like crackling.

It sounds like a constant clock ticking and is easier to hear from the back of the phone where the glass is. Other people have also mentioned hearing a high pitched frequency, which might be what your husband is hearing.

I have this issue as well. I have the kinda blue 64 gb. I bought mine from Verizon, but I'm going to return it before the window is up and hopefully get another one from Google instead. This really sucks! I just sent my 2xl back today because it even though it was just a tad bigger than my xl, I couldn't deal with it. Now I gotta give up this pixel and wait several weeks for a new one to arrive.

I'm curious what's causing it. My guess is either the NFC parts are sourced from more than one company, and one is faulty, causing the sound. Or there are just defective parts among the parts from one supplier. I don't think a software issue could fix it. We're all on exactly the same software, some have it, some don't, so I suspect it's a physical defect. The issue could even be with the speaker, since some people have that high-pitched whine too. Maybe the speaker is making audible the NFC ping. Is there even such a thing? Google support had me plug in headphones to see if the sound was transmitted to them. It was not, and still audible from the phone even with headphones plugged in, so it's not a sound being purposefully played over the speaker.

By the way, called in to Google support. They told me that the RMA for this issue is considered a new phone DOA, and therefor you have another 14 days from receipt of the replacement device added to your return window. They said they can't confirm this until you've received the replacement unit, but if it's true, at least you have another 2 weeks to make sure the replacement doesn't have issues as well.

He also said that Google is starting to consider the NFC clicking "within acceptable standards" of the phone, so RMA's may start becoming hard to come by if you're on the fence about getting one.

Interesting..no matter what I do, I can't get my small Pixel 2 to produce this sound. Knock on wood! (and NFC is on)

I have ticking, turn off NFC goes away, not sure what to do, whether to return it or not, so great otherwise...

To much going wrong, Verizon is getting this back...

Took delivery of 64 GB Pixel 2 on Monday. No issues with clicking/ticking. Happy with the build quality and display.

There's no way this should be within acceptable standards. That's ridiculous.

NFC is not something I'd ever use so if turning it off fixes it, I'd be fine with that.

Just boxed up my Pixel 2 to return to Carphone Warehouse in the UK as mine had the clicking. Very quiet but once you notice it, it bugs you. As Google Support couldn't give me a definite answer as to if a software update would fix it I'm going to take it back.
There's now a waiting period so probably get my money back and hang fire.

Really, really nice device otherwise.
