Really glad my regular-sized 2 doesn't have any ticking or hissing. I've had NFC on since it was taken out of its box. Guess this one is hit or miss.

Update - Got my RMA Pixel 2. It has the same issue with the NFC ticking. On the phone with Google now but good chance they're both going back. The CSR says "most" of the phones don't have this issue, but there's no way for them to send me one that we know is good. Very disappointing.

Edit - In case anyone else is/has done this, where they send you an RMA but you keep the original, make sure that Google has kept your preferred care on the phone you're hanging on to. It automatically changes to the RMA phone even if you don't keep it. Give them a call and they can change it back, takes about a week to do so. I ended up sending the "replacement" phone back and hanging on to my original, so we had to back out of the RMA process.

I've spent yesterday and today considering my options. For me there are no viable alternatives. I could afford the iPhone X but the camera is really not in the same league as the Pixel 2 and I'd be in iOS hell. Photo definition is really poor compared to the Pixel and in darker scenes the iPhone photos just look murky and muddy. I love everything about the Pixel 2 (well, maybe the bezels could be smaller, lol) except for the ticking sound which can only be heard when your ear is touching the phone (ie. on a call). I'm hoping Google will come out with a firmware update to sort this. I'd say a tiny percentage of my use of the phone involves calls so I have to put it in perspective - I have installed an NFC widget app which shows whether NFC is on or off and pressing it takes me directly to the NFC toggle in settings. It makes it very simple now to switch NFC on when I need it. A workaround granted, but I only use NFC for Android Pay and it looks like Apple Pay needs authentication and confirmation before it can be used, so it's hardly any quicker. As a package the Pixel 2 just can't be beaten currently. My brain now aches with all this deliberation!

Count me in to those that do NOT have the NFC ticking/whirring sound on the smaller Pixel 2. :) I only have my phone a few hours but I did a test call just to check on this.

update: I've had NFC on since my previous reply and it does tick. but it's absolutely not noticeable unless I'm putting my ear to the rear of the phone and listening for it.

Seems that not all p2s have the ticking noise then?

That being the case then surely this proves it is a hardware issue and any software update is just going to be a hack or sorts.

Have returned mine but would like to get another as it is otherwise a terrific phone.

So I tested this by listening to the back of phone, no noise, then when I looked at the phone it said no near by device ,so me listening like that triggered NFC so it would work , also tested today again during a call and luckily no noise
