Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

I just got my Google pixel XL today, and I do have to agree with some things people are saying, the colors look really washed out and dull. I do understand that the colors are more accurate, but I guess we're all used to Vivid colors now so it looks strange. I did send a letter to Google, hopefully if enough people complain they will send a software update that can fix it. Can a software update fix this issue?

But it's not an issue. It was an intentional move by Google's part.

If the color accuracy statement is really true, then I would think the smaller Pixel 2 would exhibit the same 'accuracy'.

Different panels, even if they're tuned to the same standard, may exhibit slightly different colors. As Aquila said, the two do not offer the same tuning.

Exactly... That's why I'm not buying the RGB calibration crap.

You don't have to buy anything. Google made a big deal about the color tuning of the displays. It's not people guessing, it's right from the horses mouth.

Hence his letter. "dearest google, I don't like what you've intentionally done. please redo"

I read (i wish can could remember where), that google has already said they can (of course) update the software for this, and may consider providing additional color "profiles" we can choose from in a future update instead of just the "vivid" on/off. The current "vivid" supposedly just increases saturation by 10%.

Personally, I think they should just give a slider to control the saturation with, say, 4 or so tick marks on it... low, medium, high, burn away my cataracts.

EDIT: oh, and personally, I'd set mine on low. I don't like the high saturation displays that make every photo look like it was taken in teletubby land.

Sure, but on the other hand if someone likes something what's the point in trying to convince them not to like it? A smartphone is a very personal device- what's important is that the user is happy. If I get one and hate it, I'll send it back. If I like it, I'll keep it. Either way, I'm not going to tell someone else they're wrong for feeling differently.

Hey hey now. We'll have none of that rational thought around here!! :-)

Seriously though, this is very very true and well stated. If someone hates the screen, don't buy it (or return it) and move on. Others who may like the screen (or don't mind it) will enjoy it just fine - because as you state - it's a personal device and what looks good or acceptable is SUBJECTIVE. Each person decides what's important to them and then can decide based on their personal opinions. Some of the reports are not encouraging, but then other reports see very little issues, so I will make my own determination and not make others' opinions my own.

Issues in forums (and in blogs) take on this echo chamber effect and get amplified to a deafening level sometimes. It's important sometimes to just step back and make your own rational, personal first hand decision.

"The Pixel 2 XL would be the best phone in the world if its screen wasn’t so weird" The Verge

Wow!!!! that is a huge statement and one that I am happy to be getting the 2 XL. Google will do the right thing here and that is also why I am buying from them and not a retailer. Google has stated that they will look into correcting the screen issue with a software update.

It doesn't, they're are calibrated differently. That's apparent from the keynote, the spec sheet and from simply looking at them. They made a big deal over the XL being 100% of DCI-P3.

The Pixel 2 has 95% of DCI-P3 and I really like mine :). I doubt the 5% difference is causing several reputable reviewers be so torn about the display on the 2 XL.
I'm chalking it up to LG, their QC issues, and inferior tech compared to other competitors. The blue tint thing was a problem several years ago, it should not be a 2017 problem for a $800+ phone from Google.

For sure. At this point I would say if you're on the fence and already have it pre-ordered, let the order go through and use it in person. Having it as a personal device is very different than seeing it at a Verizon store, and it may be something that just doesn't bother you in every day use. That way you can see what it's actually like to live with, and if you don't like it then you can still return it.

I went to look at the screen as well. The blue tint is definitely noticeable. The scree overall does have a slight blue to it (I like it better than a yellow tint). I have owned every Nexus device and still love the 6 (yep its big and beautiful). I have been on on iPhone experiment for a few months. Here is a comparison of the iPhone 7+ next to the XL. The screen on the XL does look a little washed out to me on the home screen especially near the bottom but not on other pages. BTW in the pic, both screens are on max brightness.

I was going to exchange my Note 8 for the Pixel 2 XL, but after seeing the screen in person and reading the reviews, I'll pass. Hard pass. P-OLED is garbage and I don't know why any phone manufacturer would use it.

Heck, the 1080 LCD screen on the iPhone 8 Plus looks better.

Isn't the screen also very reflective?? IDK if I'm just imagining it.

People are saying "Samsung screens have spoiled people"... But I'm coming from an OG PIXEL XL and I like the screen on that phone much more... The bigger beautiful screen was one of the main points for me upgrading. Now I'm just disappointed. I'll use it for a week or so and decide if I'm returning it. I will make sure to voice my disappointment to Google reps
