Pixel 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

Re: Exclusive: this is what the 2016 Nexus phones, Sailfish and Marlin, will look like

I don't see what looks so bad about the phone(s). It's a phone, not a fashion statement. Still, once you put a case on it, it'll look the same as every other phone out there.

Re: Exclusive: this is what the 2016 Nexus phones, Sailfish and Marlin, will look like

I don't like it, I know they aren't direct competitors but when you look at the phones Samsung are churning out these days this looks pathetic.

I know phones aren't fashion statements but I do like nice hardware, I use my phone alot so I'm looking at it alot and I kinda need to like it.

I think unless something dramatic happens with the next Nexus I will be moving from the Nexus range to the new Note 7 next.

I think it looks sexy. I was a fan of the early Nexus 6P renders / (PowerPoint Leak) and same for this one. I just hope it's not a bottom firing bottom speaker as the leaks say it is especially when the fingerprint is going to be on the back.

I don't think I'd mind a bottom firing speaker as long as it shortens the phone. The 6p is TALL. Front mounted or bottom mounted is worlds better than the rear firing speaker on my Note Edge. (Every time you laid the phone down, you basically silenced the phone.)

True but the 6P is just somewhat of a poorly designed phone. Why? I think it's sexy and I'm not calling it ugly. But the Nexus 6 has a 6 inch display front facing speakers AND it LESS taller than the 6P. That's Huawei's and Googles poor choice there. A 5.7 being taller than a 5.95/6 inch screen sizes phone. Imagine that! I won't mind it either, I just hope it'll be a superior quality bottom firing speaker but it's HTC so I don't doubt that its just those bezels WITHOUT front facing speakers is a bit too much.

I'm saddened by the lack of screen. With 5.5"being their 'big' phone I'll pass. Probably get a Note 7. Even though i hate touchwiz.

Re: Exclusive: this is what the 2016 Nexus phones, Sailfish and Marlin, will look like

I'm going to wait for 2017 there is nothing in these phones that would make me want to replace the 6P. The faster processor would be nice but the inferior speaker is deal killer especially since there are no other features that the 6P doesn't have. I was hoping for OIS and wireless charging which I dearly miss from the Nexus 5. The other rumored device is a new Nexus 7, if the price is right I might get one of those. I recently fired up my 2012 N7 which I haven't used for years. The form factor of the old N7 was pretty nice but I found my old N7 to be completely unusable, everything is excruciatingly slow, so I'm thinking that if there is a new N7 at a $300 price point I might get one, if it's more then that I won't bother.

Taller and smaller width makes it looks even taller. This is really the only thing I don't like about 6P. Just too darn tall.

Actually, it is a trade off, not poorly designed. The Moto X (in terms of modern smart phones) was fat -- Google made a choice to thin the phone down. Unfortunately, when you make a phone thinner, you still need extra room so you can fit everything, particularly the battery. So Google chose to make the 6P longer (since width, again, makes it harder to hold) in order to make the phone thinner. Personally, I think they made the right call as the 6P is easy to hold, for a phablet. While it could be argued they should have kept the larger screen, it still would have required making the phone slightly wider (about a 1/4 or an inch, depending on how thin they could make the bezels).

It is an interesting trade off between height and thickness.

Re: Nexus 2016 - Sailfish or Marlin?

Yeah, I'm hoping this was an early prototype or something that they had bulit for testing purposes.

I'll wait till we see what the real thing looks like, but can't say I'm a fan of this render.

.
Just a click bait article ..... " The image you're seeing is not an actual press render, but our own recreation "
.

It's not a prototype, but an unofficial render. That said, it's not just pure conjecture. Android Police apparently has an inside source, and this design is based on what that source has told them. While I'm not convinced this is what the phone will actually look like, it would not surprise me at all if some of these more unusual design elements are real. The dual material back, for example. That's too bizarre to be something they just made up, assuming their source is genuine.

That said, I kinda like it. I loved my old sparkly Nexus 4 back despite some of the early "disco ball" press shots, and the early 6P renders were totally out there as well (dat hump) but the phone itself looks fine in person.

One more thing, for those surprised this is not just a Google-branded HTC 10. Remember that HTC signed deals with Apple, and the A9 is distinctly iPhone-esque. That deal would likely not include HTC's free use of any allowed Apple design elements outside of an HTC-branded phone (and certainly not for a Nexus phone). Also, HTC would not want to cannibalize sales of the 10 by making something that looked too similar, or possibly Google leaned on them to make something different.

I agree, width is more important than height when it comes to usability. I have fairly small hands so I find the 6P just a tad wide although I've adapted to it. The height has been a non issue, I carry it in a shirt pocket and it only sticks up an inch and a half which is fine. It also fits into the phone pocket in the console of my new car, although it's at the limit here. Front facing stereo speakers are one of the best features of the 6P and I'm certainly willing to accept extra height to accommodate them, the upcoming 2016 phones have a crap downfiring speaker which they probably put in to reduce the height of the phone, that's an awful tradeoff. The one "feature" of the 6P that I could have done without is the metal body. I would have much preferred a plastic body and wireless charging then this so called premium metal body.

My wife's and my first smartphones were HTC Sensation 4Gs. A used one in like new condition, for me, and a new one for my wife. Cost us all of about $300 for the pair.
